Cheap place to stay downtown?

Some girls and I are planning a weekend in Madison Oct. 5-7. We're looking for the cheapest place to stay closest to the action. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hmm, most of the cheap places are on the far east or far west side, not "close to the action." Check out the reviews on this site for the University Inn. It is right off of State St., so the location is great. Might be noisy, and the reviews are mixed, but if your priority is low price it might do. Can't remember if there is a home football game that weekend--if so, you might be out of luck.

Football Badgers @ Illinois on 10/6, so sunshine is OK there. Recent (last c. 4 mo) Priceline bids have been $45-55 night and have not been in the downtown zones (Madison West-- Marriot & Radisson, Mad. East Courtyard). The Clarion Suites in DT was $100/nt Priceline.

Agreed that best lodging prices are not in downtown.

Clarion Suites is not consider downtown by locals. It's right near the Alliant Center/Coliseum if you were going to a concert or expo there, but it's far from the action.

It appears www.universityinn.org is not necessarily cheap and booked, but worth a look. The location can't be beat, but the facility needs updating.

Just an FYI: We ended up staying at the Campus Inn. We weren't thrilled with our room or the rate ($180), but the location was great.
