Nuwara Eliya And Badulla in early June?

We'll be flying in to Colombo on June 10 and staying 2 nights in Negombo to get situated and acclimated before travelling on. We'll spend most of that time further north and east, but wondered whether it would make sense to take a train from Colombo to Badulla on June 12 (when we're scheduled to check out of our hotel in Negombo). We were thinking of staying one night in Badulla, then perhaps one night in Kandy, then heading north.

I know it's the rainy season in the hill country, so I'm trying to find out whether it makes any sense to spend a day or two of our 3-week trip in the hill country before moving to dryer ground.

Another option would be to try to fit that trip in at the end of our vacation, before flying out.

Or should we skip it, altogether?

I would suggest Ella or Haputale over both Nuwara Eliya and Badulla.

Thanks Hans. In your opinion, would it make sense to go take the 5:55 train to Haputale to stay one night, then an early morning train the next day to Kandy and a car from Kandy to Anuradhapura (on the same day)?

It's a hectic schedule, but the rest of our trip is pretty laid back after that. I'm just trying to figure out whether rushing to fit in that train ride to Haputale is worth it. The rest of our trip would be roughly one night in A-pura, 4 nights in Giritale, 5 nights in Trinco (or close by on the beach) then rounding off with 5 nights in the Kandalama Heritance before spending a last night in Negombo and flying back to Europe.

My girlfriend isn't thrilled with the mad dash to the tea country for such a short stay, but if the scenery from the train is worth it, I'll try to talk her into it :)

ExpoRail offer the same service.

Update: We ended up taking the later train from Colombo Fort. We ended up with the prime seats on the first class observation car, which were great. We stayed 2 nights just outside of Ella. The weather was excellent and it was definitely worth visiting this area - it was one of the highlights of our trip, as a matter of fact.

I really wanted to check out this area, but my girlfriend was slightly less enthusiastic due to the rainy season. In retrospect, she loved it, too, and wished we'd had more time to spend there.

The scenery in this area is just amazing. We plan to spend a lot more time in this part of the country if and when we make it back to Sri Lanka next.

Thanks for the tips!
