best way to get to Pemuteran from Ubud

We are a group of 4 wanting to go to Pemuteran in November and wondered how we are best to do this. We don't wish to drive ourselves or go on mororbikes. Can anyone recommend a driver and how much this would this cost. Is there a more recommended/scenic route that we should drive? Thankyou.

Straight up out of Ubud, past the Bali lakes. Don't bother with lake Bratan (total tourist trap, although a very important, beautiful and well used water temple) unless early/late in the day, otherwise there will be oodles of people taking photos everywhere. Could stop at the market for a nose around? Carry on to the second and third lake on the high road, and stop at the viewpoint . Take easy going trek (or not if carrying small angry child like me!) and enjoy the clear air. Further on you get to Munduk, home of the clove farmers and beautiful view.

We had a driver for our full month with the villa so can't help with that. You could ask you accom. to sort it for you, or meet someone reliable in Ubud. Or maybe someone else could advise you?

In Ubud there are men on the streets who make their living driving. There are no metered taxis (apart from those who drop people off from the south). It will be extremely easy to just pick one of the guys. They will ask you "do you want transport?" as you are walking around. Just ask a few guys for prices, ask which vehicle is theirs and choose one of them according to what suits your family. The driver will meet you at an agreed time and take you to Pemuteran. They will be happy to stop along the way.

If you know where you are staying in Pemuteran they should be able to give you a quote our villa is picking us up from Ubud. We are happy with the quote of rp 1000.000, for 9 people with our luggage and a surf board ( 500.000, per car). I have been told the cars are in good condition with air con and we can stop where ever we want along the way.... we'll see:)

Probably could of gotten it cheaper but we are happy to have it organised now and not waste time once we get there. I'm sick of checking out cars that never turn up the next day anyway, I nearly always get someones brother or uncle turn up and their car is always inferior to the one I looked at!!

Yes, your best bet is to get a good car and driver to take you to Pemuteran. Since Ubud has too many drivers with cars, rates are better from this end, rather than having your hotel in Pemuteran arrange it. You can ask your hotel here in Ubud to sort it out, or as suggested, just ask someone nice with a good van/car you meet on the street. Find someone you enjoy talking to, since you will be spending a lot of time with them on the wonderful trip up to Pemuteran. To make a good trip of it, I would go through Mengwai to see taman ayun, then go through Pacung or one of the nice rice field view areas, then go to the Botanical Gardens right before Pura Ulun Danau (temple in the lake). Nice strawberry cafes on the road as well. Then down past the big lakes Buyan, etc....and on to Pemuteran. On the way back you can take a different route for different scenery. Can take 5 to 10 hours depending on how much you stop walk around etc. Cost these days, as your driver will come back empty, will be pricey, probably about 500,000 to 600,000 depending on car, his skills, etc etc. This doesn't include tip or cost for his meals. If you want him to wait for you overnight, the hotel can provide his accomodation free but you have to pay his daiy rate whether you use him each day or not. (only fair...he's away from his family and can't make money with any other customer). But it's well worth it, as you not only get a full day tour but transport to a fairly far away isolated location.

car from ubud about 500 000+. a long drive - candikunning (markets, botantical gardens) then danau bratan (beautiful temple, canoe hire), high road with views over two more lakes, munduk (waterfall trek) down to the coast and coast road to pemuteran.

could go via banjar (hot springs and buddhist monestery).

at pemuteran, the hotels can organise a car for onward journey. returning to the south is nice via the west coast - medewi, balian are worth a stop

Read that most of you are advising to go via the lakes.

We went from Pemuteran to Ubud by rental car.

Took the following road: Pemuteran - Seririt - Antosari - Mengwi - Ubud.

Our hotel near Ubud was south-west of Ubud, maybe we took that way because of it. And also, because the road by the lakes was already familiar to us, so we wanted to try something new.

It went perfectly well, took about 3,5 hours with short stop included.

Thankyou so much for all the information. I shall definitely go up and back the 2 different routes and we have a few days in Ubud to sort out a driver and car we feel comfortable with.
