Can anyone recommend a cheap supermarket to stock up on water etc. Staying at the Padma but do not mind if have to jump into taxi to get to a good supermarket.

There is a small supermarket next to Padma Resort for your first day or so. If you want to do a reasonable shop then you are, depending on traffic, 15 mins from Carrefour, 15 mins from Matahari Supermarket Kuta Square, and 10 mins from Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak

Thanks guys. Just another question - would any of these supermarkets be on route from the airport as just thinking if they were it might be best to stop en route to the hotel adn get the taxt to wait?

There are several small shops (Circle K/7-11 type things) nearby so I wouldn't bother when you first arrive. Once you are settled, head up to Bintang or even over to Carrefore to stock up.
