Best place for babi gulung is Ibu Oka in Ubud - the place is famous for it and it's been featured on international cooking TV programs. Sorry don't know the price, but it's cheap!

This is probably one of the most overrated dishes served here. Traditionally the Balinese love very fatty pigs. When you order a whole pig it looks lovely and makes for great photos.

However as you carve it you will notice that the skin has not been scored or rubbed with salt.thus there is very little crackling available. The meat is often overcooked and VERY fatty.

An average small pig which will give you enough pork to feed about a dozen folk should cost about 1,000,000 rupiah.

If you have not tried it before then it would be an idea to order one serve before paying for an entire pig. Babi guling is available almost everywhere and most restaurants request you order one day in advance. Where you are staying will help people suggest "the best place" to try. If you are in Ubud the try Iba Oka, but get there early before the lunch hour rush. Don't expect a fine dining experience, this is a local place where you find yourself a seat and wait to be served OR line up at the entry for a take a way with the locals.

Have to agree with Cempaka, it's not the best dish available but it is something you probably do have to try. As said, don't expect pork as we know it. Balinese pork is very fatty and the meat content is a lot less, and the quality no where near that of ours. Also it can be (depending on where you get it) very spicy.

Hi,

Try a plate of it with rice, soup and condiments first.

There's one warung across the road from the Petitenget Temple serving Babi Guling. Passable but not the best.

My personal fav is on Jln Malboro. Go pass the petrol station and it is on your left (driving towards Denpasar). You cant miss the crowded car park and the painting of the pig.

Sorry I did not answer the question correctly . As a guide the last babi guling I organised was 25 kg and cost 1,000,000 rupiah delivered whole.

This was with lawar and all the associated trimmings.

This was last Friday. (7/1/2011)
