Hire a driver for the day. Cost will be about 450,000 Rp. It is a long way, but so worth it when you get there.

It's a long way regardless of which ever route you take.

You can go up the By Pass Road to the north of Sanur and then take the East Coast Road all the way up but this is a heavily used road with lots of trucks and road works. This is most direct route but will still be at least 3.5hrs.

Or when you get to the big round about north of Sanur keep going straight ahead and go through Batu Bulan and skirt the outskirts of Ubud. You will then travel through the City of Gianyar and into Klung Kung and then head out onto the coast road a bit south of Candi Dasa. This is a more interesting route but is slower because it's both longer and you have to deal with traffic (and it much easier to get lost this way), so it's probably a 4 hour trip from Kuta.

I would suggest also that you hire a car and driver and sit back and relax and take in the scenery.
