Thekkady or Munnar?

Hi,

We have planned a family trip to South India (24th December through 8th January). We will land in Chennai and plan to rent a car with driver to travel throughTamil Nadu with stops in Pondichery, Trichy, Madurai and finish our holiday wiht a few days of ralaxation on the MaMahabalipuram beach. We were recommended to also visit Munnar, Thekkady and the Backwaters (Alleppey - Kollam). However, we believe that maybe cramming in too much in only 2 weeks. We do want to go to Alleppey and then take the night train back to Chennai from Cochin, but believe that we need to pick between either a stop in Munnar or a stop in Thekkady. Which one would you recommend? Any suggestions on a nice and inexpensive place to stay are also welcome.

Thanks!

Lut

Hi Lut

Unless you have a reason to go to Trichy, i would suggest you break this up into 3 segments.

1. Arrive Chennai and take an overnight train to Madurai. Complete Madurai, take a cab to Kodai and back to Madurai (One Night Madurai 2 nights Kodai)

2. Take an overnight train from Madurai to Kochin / Allepy for a backwater cruise (1 night 2 days) OR

Take a cab from Madurai to either Munnar (hillstation) or Thekkady (wildlife) one night and two days stay, before proceeding to Allepy - One night. However, remember you wiill be charged bothways for the cab.

My personal take on this is skip Munnar for you are anyways doing Kodai or skip Kodai and do Munnar and proceed to Allepy for the houseboat.

3. Fly back or Take a train back to Chennai from Allepy or Cochin and chill out at Mahabalipuram for the rest of the days.

This way, you will cut out on the cab, which can get tedious. The flip side, as the earlier poster mentioned, this is peak season and you will need to do all your train / flight booking in advance.

hope this helps

Dear Rajan,

Thank you for your advise! We had not considered Kodai, but I'll definitely look into it. We don't really have a specific reason to go to Trichy, but do want to spend a 1-2 days in Pondicherry and thought to stop by Trichy on our way to Madurai. The night train does sound tempting as I personally find that more comfortable than travelling by car.

Thanks again!

Dear sir

Car is very comfort for traveling to many places. Innova of Toyota is good for long distance. Mr.Rajan suggest for train is good but season time will be no tickets anywhere. Even Innova in very demand for 'Sabarimala season'. Send me PM for very good rate for Innova

yours faithfully

Dear Velu,

Thanks for your advise! Actually, we have received a quote for a 2 week's tour with a Toyota Innova. However, that option means spending 4-5 hours per day on averagy and thus very little relaxation time. If we cannot find tickets on the night train from Cochin to Chennai, then we may need to just focus on Tamil Nadu and forget about the Backwaters.

Kind regards,

Lut

Nearest destination to Madurai is Thekkady (around 145 kms / 3 - 3.30 hrs drive) You can take houseboat either in Kumarakom or Alleppey. Thekkady to Kumarakom is around 4 hrs drive and Alleppey around 5 hour drive. you can board train to Chennai either from Alleppey or Ernakulam (Cochin). Cochin to Chennai is around 1200 hrs train journey.

Actually, I was still able to find 4 berths in 1A on the night train on 5th January from Cochin to Chennai via www.irctc.co.in. However, it appears that facility to use an international credid card for making the payment is not available. Do you know a local agent where I could book tickets?
