Subject: aramark houseboat rentals lake powell

Location: Page, Arizona, United States, North America

Title: disappointed and disastrous vacation plans

ID#: 6564858

In February of 2006 I called Aramark regarding the rental of a

Houseboat for 8 people during the New Year Holiday 30th and 31st December 2006.

2 of us were flying in from Florida and 6 were travelling from

Scotland, I explained that it would be a bit of a scheduling nightmare as we

were coming from different areas and travelling around Nevada Utah and

Arizona for the vacation, So I asked how quickly should I book the

Houseboat, the reply was as quick as possible we only have 3 left. I called

everyone and we agreed that although it would be cold it would be a

beautiful time of year to travel on the Lake. I asked many questions over

the coming months was it feasible in our allocated time to travel to

Rainbow Bridge and back? Did the boat have adequate heating? What

linens were provided for a winter trip? and many other incidentals. My

partner called in December to ask some questions about the engines

generator etc and fuel consumption to go to Rainbow bridge. He called again

on the 29th December just to confirm all was well, this time he was

told there was no gas available at Dangling rope, major problem, he

finally got to speak to someone at waheap and not Phoenix or Denver, this

time they suggested that we could make it up the Lake if we did not use

the generator (not very appealing in cold weather) or perhaps we should

take a 19' speed boat with us and us that to explore the lake, 8 people

in a 19' speed boat is not a safe idea, nor is taking a 53" houseboat

out on the lake with no availability of Gas. Aramark Lied to us and

ruined a vacation for 8 people, 6 of them had travelled 6000 miles. They

would also have jeopordized the lives of 8 people if my partner had not

been a boater and had been persuaded to take the Houseboat without the

availability of gas on the Lake a 53' floating house drifting on a

500-600' deep lake would have drifted and possibly sunk when we ran out of

gas, and floated toward the rocks. We have had major trouble getting

our money back and we still have not received the $600.00 deposit we

paid in February. The Aramark staff do not have the knowledge to be

renting out these boats , and due to their lies caused major disappointment

for 8 holiday makers to the area. I for one had been wanting to do

this trip for the past ten years, so had done a lot of research even

emailing other sites about this adventure, getting advice etc, one major

site did not know that the dangling rope marina had been closed in

November and had been sending people out on the lake. If they had just told

us in November that the fuel station was closed we could have had time

to make other reservations for our New Year Holiday as it was we stayed

at the Best Western in Page which was a disaster

Well, you certainly should have done a bit more reasearch. There is no way to get to rainbow bridge via a houseboat. Once you get to the dock, where there isn't room for mooring a houseboat, it is a mile+ hike to the bridge. On a lake the size of lake powell which is over 140 miles long, the sheer magnitude of getting gas to a marina that has no land access is amazing. If you had talked to anyone about lake powell that had been there, they would tell you that you can never 100% depend on gas being at Dangling Rope, even during the busy summer season.

Just getting to the Rainbow Bridge canyon is 50miles of water, not something taken lightly in a houseboat. Aramark was completely correct in suggesting you get a runabout for exploring the lake. 8 people in a 19' boat is perfectly safe and done quite regularly in that lake.

Don't get me completely wrong, I am no Aramark fan. Being the sole concessionner for Lake Powell, they have a virtual monopoly, although that has now change with the opening of Antelope Point marina. Their prices are too high and there is no competition to even make them consider lowering them. If Dangling Rope would have been open, you would have been paying around $4-5/gallon

Don't let one experience spoil Rainbow Bridge for you. The trip is spectacular and even worth the 1.5 mile hike in 100+ F weather during the summer. I go to Powell two or more times/month during the summer and try to make the 50mile trek there at least once a year. It is awesome.

Just talk to someone who has been there. Get the feel of the lake. Winter is an empty time on water, but you might occasionally see us there waterskiing. Get a runabout and use that to get where you need to. Take the houseboat 20miles or so up the lake and beach it, thats what they are designed for. Good luck and try again this next year.
