Glia Cliff Dwellings

I saw that the Gila Cliff Dwellings are now closed. Any ideas on when they might be re-opened? On the web site it states that guided tours of the "TJ Site" are offered each day. What is this?

Hopefully the repairs will be completed in the next couple of weeks. The bridge in question has washed out a couple of times in recent years, and the repairs will be a longer-term solution. Also, the Visitor Center is undergoing repair to the roof, so a temporary center has been set up in a trailer adjacent to the VC.

The TJ Ruins are a recently -discovered 200-room pueblo that is still unexcavated. If you are interested in archaeology, this should be of great interest, especially since the site is usually not open to the general public.

Thanks, Casa.

Mitch, We are thinking about a late March trip and are torn between the northern and southern parts of the state. There is so much to see.

Late March is an excellent time to visit southern NM. The odds are good that the Cliff Dwellings repairs should be finished by then, and usually the weather is cooperative.

Whether you decide on the north or the south really depends on what your priorities are, how many days you have available for the visit, whether you have been to NM before, and how much driving you'd care to do. One bit of guidance I can give you up front: unless you've got at least two weeks, preferably more, you should resign yourself to visiting only a portion of New Mexico. We're the fifth-largest state in the Union, there's lots to see, and the distances between points of interest can eat up your time.

Regarding the Cliff Dwellings-- see below:

GILA CLIFF DWELLINGS REOPEN

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument invites the public to return to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Superintendent Steve Riley announced today that the Gila Cliff Dwellings will reopen at 9 am on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. This reopening follows the completion of repairs to the West Fork Bridge on New Mexico Highway 15, one mile south of the cliff dwellings. The repairs were necessary due to damage caused by flooding in 2008 and 2010.

A tip before you head to the Cliff Dwellings. Be sure to gas up in Silver City and also grab some food and drinks. I always get a sub sandwich in Silver City before heading to the Cliff Dwellings.

Carl has a good suggestion. While there is a gas station/trading post about 6 miles south of the Cliff Dwellings at Gila Hot Springs, being prepared couldn't hurt. Remember that NM 15 is not plowed at night or on weekends, so you should keep an eye on the weather conditions, too.
