12 Hour JFK Layover: Time enough for Brooklyn?

We arrive JFK Terminal 3 @ 6:15am on Sunday, Sept.16, departing JFK @ 6:45pm (not sure of Terminal; we're heading to London-maybe Terminal 4?)

We (2 of us) will have only one carry-on and are planning to use the luggage storage at Terminal 4 (unless Delta has something in Terminal 3) so we don't have to wait for baggage.

Would something like this work within our time frame? If so, suggestions for transportation route using AirTrain/Subway/Train are appreciated!

Head to Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6, walk along the Greenway up towards the Governors Island Ferry. Take Ferry to Gov. Island, make a short visit, ferry back. If time allows, walk up toward Brooklyn Bridge Park Fulton Ferry & Main Street area. Take transportation back to aiport about 3:15 or so.

Is there a complete walking path from Pier 6 up to the Governors Ferry area? We're just looking for some walking time, being outside (if weather permits) any outdoor markets, or nice neighborhoods close by. Or any other suggestions are more than welcome!

Thanks so much for any advice!

I'm not sure what you hope to get out of Governors Island with such a short visit -- it's more a place people go to hang out all day, have picnics, ride bikes, attend art festivals, etc. than it is a place with sights that are easy to cross off. That said, yes, you could probably do this.

You'd take the Airtrain from the terminal to the Howard Beach station, where you'd catch the A train. You'd take that to the High Street stop.

In terms of markets, you'd be close to the Dekalb Market, which is held in and around old shipping containers:

And you'd be close to three appealing neighborhoods -- Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo, and Fort Greene.

Have you been to NYC before? If not, I suggest visiting Manhattan. It will take you 1.5 hours to get there and back, same as Brooklyn. Also you will need to arrive at JFK 2 hours before your flight. So your total time in our city is 7 hours - not bad!

Crans, thanks for the information as it helps a lot as a first time visitor. Gov. Island was just an idea to get out on the water for something different and mostly to maybe get a better view of Statue of Liberty. Hopefully we will be close enough near the Brooklyn Bridge area for a decent view of SOL? It may be too time consuming to take the ferry after all.

Would we see anything different around the Pier 6 area than the Brooklyn Bridge park/Dumbo area? Seems like we'd backtrack a bit if we come & go from High Street. What streets do you recommend walking through in the Brooklyn Heights area? Maybe we can go to the Dekalb market early for some breakfast, then walk in towards the harbor area & up to Brooklyn Bridge Park/Dumbo. Hard to know & plan just off google maps, and we're not used to big cities or public transportation much as we don't have any here in the farm fields of Idaho!

Thanks again for the help!

The SOL is not terribly large and is a good distance from Brooklyn, so while you'll be able to see it, you won't get the greatest view in the world. This is what it's like:

The section of Brooklyn Bridge Park near Dumbo is, imo, better than Pier 6 -- it's more developed and the views are more dramatic because the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge are both right there.

Here's a walking tour (with a map) of Brooklyn Heights:
