As I will be in the US from the UK for a week at new year, I thought I would take the chance to visit Alaska; I've always wanted to see it in winter, tho' most folks think I'm crazy! I arrive Anchorage Saturday 6th, fly out Tues 16th. I've some ideas about what I want to do but they aren't fixed and any other ideas / comments much appreciated. I'm a not-young woman; I'll be travelling alone, which suits me fine, tho' some company some of the time would be nice.
Plan to take train Fairbanks - Anchorage Sun 14th. So will fly to Fairbanks 8/9th after a day or two in Anchorage. Want to see northern lights (of course!), maybe do some snowshoe walking, ice fishing maybe? I know it will be dark a lot and I'm happy to sit & read and / or chat.
I'd like somewhere to stay that can be WARM, reasonably comfortable & decent food tho' don't need (or want) luxury. I wondered about Chatanika Lodge or Hostel for 2/3/4 days?
I'd thought initially that hiring a car not good that time of year but sounds like the roads at least to Chena will be OK?
As I said, any suggestions gratefully received.
