after a cruise

For my 30th birthday I will be taking a cruise to Alaska in May and we are stuck between driving or taking a train to Fairbanks after the cruise (stopping in Denali either way). This is our first time in Alaska and we wanted to see all we can. We are also looking for suggestion on what to do when we get to Fairbanks (or the surrounding area) and where to stay -we will be there about 4 days give or take. Any suggestion are appreciated.

I very much recommend you rent a car, so you have the ability to stop and explore when you want to.

When you say you'll be "there" 4 days, do you mean Fairbanks itself, or that is the total time you have for your landtour? Here is a thread that will give you some good ideas about things to do in Fairbanks:

Are you cruising to Seward or Whittier? What date do you arrive, and what time and date to you fly out of Anchorage?

It would help if you gave us some idea of the lodging you're looking for--hotel, B&B, etc. and price range.

Also what types of things you'd like to do...hiking, museums, glaciers, wildlife, etc.

Note that if you only have four days and want to go to both Denali and Fairbanks, and if you rent a car, it will have to be a one-way car rental. You just would not have the time to return the car back to Anchorage. But taking the train is tough because being without a car at Denali is limiting.

If you do rent a car, Avis in Whittier or Hertz in Seward might be your best bet (the only options in those towns) rather than getting yourselves to Anchorage and renting from there. With only 4 days or so, time is of the essence.

Thanks for the suggestion of renting a car, I was just unsure of the roads and the weather at that time. We will be arriving in Whittier on a Monday 12:30am and we will have a full week to get to and visit in Fairbanks before we fly out of Fairbanks. So we were thinking of spending a full day in Denali. We would prefer a hotel or motel mid range (holiday inn type of place). We like the outdoors and taking pictures. A hike that would be a couple hours is ok tours are ok also. Thanks Again!

What date in May do you arrive? That's very early in the season for Denali, and the road into the park isn't open until about May 20, and that's only as far as Toklat (6 hr. roundtrip).

Roads are fine, though you might get delayed a bit by construction.

If you rent a car in Whittier or Anchorage, be aware that there will be a large drop-off fee if you leave it in Fairbanks. Might be worth your while for the convenience and flexibility, but find out what it will be before making a final decision. Cars will be less expensive in Anchorage at off-airport locations, so you might consider taking a shuttle or train from Whittier to Anchorage and renting your vehicle there.

It would help if you mentioned what you are interested in doing (hiking, kayaking, goldpanning, fishing, glacier-hiking, seeing glaciers, wildlife, whitewater rafting, flightseeing McKinley, etc.)
