Jekyl Island ????

Can anyone tell me if it's worth traveling to jekyl island from Savannah? How long would it take and is it worth the trip? What's it like to live there? or is it a tourist trap?

Thanks in advance

Is there a special reason that you want to go? It's a lot quieter and much less developed than Tybee.

Housing on the Island is restricted and there is not much commercial development. No, it's not what I would call a tourist trap. Unless it has changed recently, the entire island is owned and controlled by the State of Georgia. The original aim was to keep it in as an undeveloped state as possible. a few hotels, restaurants and small stores are there. No big shopping malls.

If you are looking for a nice quiet retreat with a nice beach, it's worth traveling from Savannah. If all you want is to swim and lay on the sand, then the beach at Savannah (Tybee) would do as well. It really depends on what you want. There are some nice golf courses there.

It's about 90 miles from Savannah, and depending on how you drive, it will take you about an hour and a half.

Thanks Aileen - I wondered what it was like because we have friends who are thinking of retiring there. Sounds too quiet for us though.

If they are into golf, it's not bad at all. It is quiet and while it gets hot in the summer, there's usually a breeze from the ocean. The winters have a lot of very nice days.

Brunswick would be the nearest city of any size. When someone is thinking of retiring, they need to think about how far to medical facilities if they have any health problems. For real fancy treatment, they would probably have to go to either Jacksonville or Savannah.
