Where to stay!

Hi

Aug will be our first time in Savannah. We are 2 adults and a 16 yr old. We want to be in the centre so we can see everything, but not sure if to stay in hotel, or B&B. What part of the city is best to stay in?

thanks in advance!

Your best bet is to look at as many posts here as you can. The B&Bs might be a bit too formal for your 16 year old so personally I would recommend a hotel along Bay Street and there are many! Determine your price range and look at hotels on East Bay mostly. The city is small and easily walkable. Because it is small, there really is only one area where the hotels are so there isn't much of a "best". Bay Street parallels River Street (which is fun but very touristy) and on the other side parallels Broughton Street which is the "Main St" of Savannah. The parks start a couple of streets in from the River and go down to Forsythe Park which is the end point of the Historic District. When you look at a map you will see that there are a huge number of small streets that parallel the River and also are perpendicular to the River, but all are small and its easy to find your way around. There are some very nice hotels near Forsythe Park but with a teenager, you are better off on East Bay as she/he can explore on her/his own more on that side of the HD. Avoid any hotels that say "midtown" as that is too far from the HD for visitors and is a huge strip mall section that is useful but colorless.

Also consider The DeSoto Hilton, it is really the most central for the entire HD. It is only a few blocks difference, but worth a look. The majority of restaurants, River St., City Market are all closer to the Bay St hotels so have that in mind.

My favorite location is along Bay Street. The Hampton Inn, Staybridge Suites, Holiday Inn Express, Avia...etc. Not a fan of the DeSoto Hilton. Just seems out of place in Savannah (style-wise) and is an older property in a city with a lot of newer, nicer properties.

Thanks for all your advice. I think an older style property is what we will aim for and i like the sound of staying in the Bay Street location

thanks again
