Amtrak to Savannah

We have booked an Amtrak train from Winter Park, Florida to Savannah for Easter weekend.

We have driven to Savannah several times, but thought the train may be a different experience. Do any of you helpful local experts know how far it is from the Amtrak station to the Hyatt on River Street, and also what would be our best option to get to our hotel? We appreciate any help that you can offer...thank you!

I don't think that you have but two choices. Taxi or rent a car. Sorry, but I don't think there is any kind of public transportation to the station. The station is not in what you would call a convenient location. Several miles out in what is basically a small industry area.

I would get a cab unless you plan to go outside of the Historic District. The Hyatt has valet parking in a parking garage. It does not have parking on the grounds. So you would have to be bothered with that if you rented a car.

There may be some sort of shuttle service from the Hyatt. Call them to find out.

Definitely call the Hyatt regarding a shuttle. That is your easiest option. Option #2 - taxi. There are no rental car agencies close to the Amtrak station. You will also want to have the local phone numbers for both the Hyatt and several local cabs with you to phone as soon as you arrive. The Amtrak station is only about 5 miles from the Hyatt, but it is way off the beaten path in an empty section of west Savannah. Since only two trains come through daily, as soon as everyone is off and on at the station, it closes down until the next scheduled arrival.

I don't know if you have taken the train before but just a few unsolicited hints:

Bring whatever you want to eat or drink. There is lots of room for coolers or bags and the train food is limited and they run out of the good stuff quick.

If you don't like your seat, ask to move, they don't usually mind. We had a very smelly person sit by us once and were glad to get another seat.

Use the bathrooms early, they go downhill fast.

Have fun, we enjoy it, despite the adventures, and will continue to use the train for short trips. Long trips it is cheaper to fly.
