We are going to be visiting Savannah in May,coming all the way from Australia. We have been told by a friend that Charleston leaves Savannah far behind (as far as being a great touring city). Naturally, I am disappointed to hear this as I have been looking forward to visiting Savannah for a long time. Can anyone reassure me? How long would it take to drive from Savannah to Charleston if we decided to explore both cities? We are staying at Eliza Thompson House in the Historic District and I am looking forward to that as well - any comments?

Your friend probably visited the two cities 25 years ago, and that would have been true.

Today is totally different. Savannah has experienced a wonderful metamorphasis. It is a beautiful city filled with trees and greenery. You don't get the garden atmosphere in Charleston.

It also could be a matter of taste....Charleston has a very refined, British flair, where Savannah has much more of a European mix in its background and architecture. We are also much more of a party city than Charleston. Everyone strolls the streets in the evening walking dogs, carrying their beer with them.

Come enjoy both Savannah and Charleston. You are travelling from the other side of the world, and we are only 2 hours apart. You won't regret it.

Savannah is also a much more convenient walking city. Charleston's points of interest are spread out and parking is terrible.

Savannah has outlying points of interest also but you could spend days walking around the Historic District, visiting museums and sitting in squares, never needing to drive anywhere.

Having been to both, I prefer Savannah as well. It is much easier to walk, and more lush and beautiful. It also has a quirky vibe all of its own, while Charleston feels more stately and reserved.

Hi, hope ok to jump in, we're also planning a trip to Savannah first time and thinking of possibly Charleston also. How many days you think good in Savannah? I have points I can use towards Westin or Sheraton, any thoughts on either of those hotels? We were thinking of 4 days. Thanks!

I have been to both and though Charleston is a beautiful city, it doesn't compare to the beauty of Savannah! I've been to Charleston once but I've returned to Savannah 3 times and am planning a 4th trip.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate the reassurances. I think we will probably end up checking out both Savannah and Charleston but, if I have to make a choice (due to time constraints), I will choose Savannah. I'll just have to come back again for Charleston, won't I???

Krys - 2 days in Savannah is good for a start, but you will only get to explore the Historic District. If you stay for 4 days, you will have time to see the beauty of the coastal marshlands and explore the forts and historic sites in the county.

But you could do 2 days here and 2 days in Charleston, then decide on where to return for a future visit.

I went to both Savannah and Charleston a couple of years ago and loved them both. Savannah is more of a walking city and I absolutely adored it. I can't comment on your accomodation as I didn't stay there. Have a great time.

were i coming all that way from where you are traveling i would do BOTH! it's not much more than a scant 125 miles separating the two and easily drivable. that way you can make up your own mind plus see both as they are two beautiful cities. i hope you enjoy your visit! you are going to love it
