How is the traffic going to DC on friday 5pm ish?

I'll be visiting DC for a short time then move on to DC on friday.

I'm wondering if the traffic would be bad going to DC around 5pm...

is it really bad?

I would say it's about as bad as it gets. Southbound I-95 always seems to crawl where it intersects with the Washington beltway and continues to move slowly around the Beltway.

The best alternative would be to travel at a time other than rush hour, and/or take the train if possible. Where exactly will you be travelling from/to?

thanks renfield1969 for your reply!

We'll be leaving from NJ at 11am to Baltimore, and would probably take an hour long spirit cruise at 2pm then leave to washington DC.

do you also have any idea how pirit of Baltimore Inner Harbor Sightseeing Cruise is? is it worth taking it?

I can't think of an alternative route that isn't going to have you in the thick of DC rush hour one way or the other.

Unless you have specific plans that require you to be in DC, it might be more relaxing for you to hang out in Baltimore for a while after your cruise and leave at 6:00 or later to beat the prime rush hour traffic.

With no traffic you can make it from Baltimore to downtown DC in under an hour. At any peak time it's going to take double that, at least. Even if you leave at 6 p.m. you're going to sit in traffic...on 95...495...and any other route you use to get downtown.

I would recommend you park at a subway station and take the metro downtown....but even then you'll sit in traffic to get there. Sorry...and good luck!

Yes. But from 3-8 pm, DC traffic is a nightmare so even then you'll probably hit some traffic the closer you get downtown and to 3 p.m.

But. 2 pm would be better than 5 or 6...by far.
