24 hours in N. Florida - where to spend it?

We are driving down I-95 from NC to Disneyworld in mid-July and have 24 hours to kill along the way. A straight trip would be about an 8-hour drive, but we prefer to break it up and spend the night somewhere along the way and explore a little. Travelers are an adult and an 8-year-old. We are meeting up with the rest of the family in Orlando. Thereafter, we will be spending 4 days at Disney then 6 days at Cocoa Beach.

Just trying to think of where a good place to break up the 8-hour drive might be. We've been to Savannah and Sea Island, Ga before. I was thinking of driving into Florida before stopping for our 24-hour adventure somewhere. We could go to Amelia Island, Jacksonville or nearby beaches; we could go to St. Augustine or somewhere else.

Any suggestions? I don't know Florida well other than the Orlando area.

With an 8 year old it might be fun to stop in St. Augustine and visit the old town... the fort on the bay is both historic and photogenic. Every 8 year old is practically required the Barrel Roll down the hill surrounding it - great spot for a break or picnic. There's a pirate museum across the street, St George Street for some local chocolate or ice cream, the there's the Black Raven pirate ship on the intracoastal that is perfect for the child and has a great bar onboard for the parents. It's actually a fun ride, goes under the drawbridge and up towards Porpoise Point.

Or if that is too many pirates for you, just drive over the Bridge of Lions and climb the 281 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse, visit the Alligator Farm (zoo), or hit the beach. Whew I'm tired just thinking about all those options! Have fun.

I 2nd St. Augustine. More to do there. Amelia Island is nice but a smaller town.

I would recommend stopping at the Jacksonville Zoo (we have an excellent zoo) in the morning, then driving south to the Museum of Science and history . A few hours at MOSH, then if you are coming down on a week day, walk across the street to the Skyway station and ride it to Hemming Park. Walk across the street to Sweet Pete's. Schedule a candy making class if enough time. That is Jacksonville's version of Disney World. Animals, hands on excitement, monorail and the childlike fantasy feeling at Sweet Pete's. Have fun!

These are such great suggestions. Thanks so much, everyone. We are leaning toward St. Augustine, but I love the idea of the candy-making class at Sweet Pete's in Jax, too. We are planning to return to Florida again in February, so anything we can't fit in this trip, we'll make room for it next time!
