Visiting for the first time

Hi, we are looking at visiting Gettysburg in October next year as part of a longer trip. As a foreigner, I'd like to spend a bit of time here learning about the history. Is a visit to the museum enough, or would you suggest a tour as well?

Is this museum enough? No

You should take time and tour the Battlefield. The best way is to hire a Licensed Guide that will drive your car and stop at strategic points throughout the tour. These guides are well versed in the Battle and can really explain it more so than driving and using a map. October is a great time to visit, with less crowds and comfortable weather.

and you should read any of the excellent books or watch the movie Gettysburg so you have some perspective before you get here.

Great suggestion. Highly recommend "Battle Cry of Freedom" by James McPherson.

I live about 30-45 minutes from Gettysburg. I do know that Gettysburg does have a lot to offer. There is a visitors center/museum but that has a $10.50 admission. You have to explore the battlefield. It is virtually untouched. However, it also depends how long you are going to be in Gettysburg and when you are going; if you are aiming for a really quick day trip, then at least go to the visitors center. But it's not the same without the battlefield tour.

At the very least do the battlefield bus tour. It is pretty informative and my whole family enjoyed it. If you have time you can take your car and revisit different locations.

Also I recommend the Shriver House tour. It tells the story of the civilian side of the battle.
