Day Trips from Philly

Hi All,

We're a family of 2 adults and 2 kids (10,4yrs) on a road trip and will be exploring Philly in the last leg of our trip, last week of Jun. We've already planned to visit Philly city, Lancaster, an outlet mall, Morey's Waterfront Amusement Park and perhaps Cape May (is the sand nice there?) What else is interesting outside of Philly? We're open to all suggestions. We'll be flying off from JFK airport on the last day.

I am unsure what you may want to compare Cape May's sand to, but IMHO, yes their sand is nice. And I suggest Sunset Beach http://www.njsouth.com/index-sunsetbeach.htm so the kids can beachcomb for Cape May Diamonds en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_May_diamonds since they need polishing, you can purchase some polished ones in the shop. You can visit the lighthouse and adjacent park too state.nj.us/dep/…capemay.html This is an old post of mine >>in Clermont is Cape May Wicker. You may have been to the one in Cape May, but this one is huge. There is no website, it does business by word~of~mouth.. or we could call it a well~known secret. Cape May Wicker 1930 N Route 9, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210 (609) 624-3031 ‎

Once you've parked you can visit two other places on foot

Next door is Teaberry Antiques http://teaberryantiquesnj.com/

Accross Rt9 is Woodland Village It's a bunch of little shops including a butterfly house http://www.imaginebutterfliesnj.com/ Here is a YouTube video I just found for Woodland Village

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usQsViqrlT8 Please use caution when crossing rt9 as there is no signal and the speed limit is 50mph<<

And you may want to visit New Hope PA http://www.visitnewhope.com/ & Washington Crossing http://www.ushistory.org/washingtoncrossing/ further up the Delaware River is tubing http://delawarerivertubing.com/ It's a lazy tube ride down the river, a good chance to sit back in a tube, catch some Sun & shade, and relax

Be sure to allow more than a day in Philadelphia, itself.

I agree with Lynn -- I hope you're spending time in Philadelphia.

Also, I like the King of Prussia mall, which is huge, much better than any outlet mall. I don't think outlets are that great. In general, I think both the quality and the styles at outlets are worse than what's available in regular stores. For great shopping, King of Prussia -- which has regular stores, not outlets -- is the place to go.

With kids that age, there is a lot to do right in Philly or across the river. They will like the Franklin Institute, the Camden aquarium and the ferry ride ride to and from there. Kids also enjoy riding the ducks (boat ride) and Franklin Square. If you want short day trips outside of Philly you could go to Valley Forge Park, Longwood Gardens, and Washington Crossing are just a few places to visit. I recommend skipping the shopping and spend time at Dutch Wonderland with kids that age or go to Strasbourg in Lancaster County and take the train ride and visit the train museum. The more fun your kids have, the more fun you will have too.

I highly recommend hotel reservations wherever you go or you might end up driving miles out of your way to get a room.

Have a great trip.

Thanks all for taking time with your replies and suggestions. We certainly intend to spend at least a day or more in Philly. We plan to see Reading Terminal Market, Fairmount Park and boathouse row (when can we catch some rowing activity?), Fireman's Hall, Elfreth's Alley (are there nicer, old residential areas besides this?), Brookyln flea, Macy's for the architecture and explore Philly neighbourhoods (any suggestions for which neighbourhood?) and perhaps the State Penitentiary. We also want to try out some famous Philly eats like Philly cheesesteak (everyone seems to have their own favourite, so am confused which 1 to try), Sabrina Cafe and Pesto restaurant. Have I missed out anything else that's interesting in Philly? If not, how much time would I need for the itinerary above?

@rship1: By nice beach, I mean white, powdery sand. Your suggestions for beachcombing (my 4yr old who's recently into rock collection will appreciate this) and rivertubing are so interesting!

Well, all the Ocean Beaches in South Jersey are white powdery sand.

Sunset Beach, in Cape May Point is a Delaware Bay Beach . It is pebbly, which is why you find Cape May Diamonds there (Actually pieces of quartz that have washed down the Delaware River) However it is a free Beach. None of the Ocean Beaches are free except Wildwood's
