Train to DC, book seats?

Hello, we are 4 adults considering using Amtrak from Philly to DC on Labour Day. Do we book standard class, or should we upgrade to ensure seating together?

AMTRAK does not have assigned seats, so there is no way in advance to ensure that you will be seated together. You should purchase in advance to get a reduced fare- they price as the airlines do- the closer you get to the date of travel, the higher the price.

If, when you board the train, you do not have seats together, you may be able to get together in the cafe/bar car. BTW, it is generally not polite to ask someone who is already seated to move.

I've never seen any reason to upgrade from coach class on the regional Amtrak trains, which are the least expensive tickets. Coach class is quite comfortable.

As Owlyn said, there is no way to guarantee that you'll all be able to sit together. It's possible that upgrading would give you a better shot of finding seats together if there are usually more open seats in the upgraded cars -- but since I never upgrade, I don't know how well those seats sell.

There are usually a lot more seats available together in Business Class; but their availibility will also depend on the day of week & time of day chosen.

if you don't find 2 seats together at first, just sit near each other. Often if you start talking across the aisle, someone will offer to switch seats.
