Roadtrip from San Francisco to Mammoth Lake

Hi, we are planning to drive down from SF to Mammoth Lake in early December. Can you please let us know which is the best route to take and how long the journey will be? Also, will there be any issues with snow blocking roads or anything like that? Thank you.

If it is snowing, then you will be unable to get there in any kind of direct route, as those passes close (usually in early December, sometimes earlier). You would have to head far north, to then head down to Mammoth, I don't recommend this drive in the winter.

You would likely have to drive from SF to Tahoe and then Tahoe to Mammoth down 395. I did the drive in January one year. While it was not snowing the wind was howling blowing snow over the road making it icy, tractor trailers were blowing over. Driving on 395 was the single most harrowing driving experience ever.

In winter the road to the Lakes is not alway fully accessible depending on the snow. What had you planned to do?

I-80 usually doen't close for very long unless it is a blizzard, but chains very might be mandatory. Then as Suzie has said 395 can get really treacherous in the winter.
