nervous Brit, driving to Mammoth Lakes - is it safe??

On our trip from Las Vegas to San Francisco, we are stopping at the Westin Monache resort and now I'm panicking about road conditions into and out of the resort. So we will be coming from Las Vegas on Highway 395, and then leaving to go to Yosemite Park.

Are the main roads clear or do I need to worry about tyre chains. I'm having difficulty finding out about the road conditions on smaller roads once we leave the highway. As our only previous experience of the US was New York, any advice about driving around Mammoth would be much appreciated!

Many thanks for the advice. We've spoken to our travel agent and they've agreed to change our route, so we are now going Las Vegas, Los Angeles and up the coast to San Francisco. perhaps we will come back to Mammoth & yosemite in a few years' time at a better time of year!

Great, except that you can't drive up the coast from LA to SF right now, or for about the next month. The highway is closed in sections due to mudslides and highway has to be reconstructed.

You will have to take a different route for part of your drive due to the road closure however the alternate routte is not longer. It is also not as beautiful.

You will need to drive on 101 instead of Highway 1 due to the road closures

Here are the closure locations:

Highway 1 IS CLOSED 6.8 MI North of the SAN LUIS OBISPO/MONTEREY CO line - due to a landslide. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route

Highway 1 IS CLOSED FROM 13.7 MI NORTH OF BIG SUR STATE PARK /AT ROCKY CREEK/

(MONTEREY CO) - due to a slip out. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route

You should take a look at www.caltrans.ca.gov and enter your road number in the seach box.

Where did your travel agent book you along the coast?

Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay & Cambria are all accessible via Highway 101 and Highway 1.

The drive north from Cambria through Big Sur into Carmel/Monterey will be closed due to part of the road collapsing into the ocean.

You would have to cut over to Highway 101 from the Cambria area via Highway 46 and take the Monterey Peninsula exit in Salinas to get to Carmel/Monterey.

You would still enjoy a nice amount of coastal scenery, but no Big Sur, I'm afraid.
