mammoth lakes to yosemit

We live in Brazil, in a town that is always summer, very hot.

This year we are going to spend our vocacion driving throuth California, Nevada and so...

We are going to spend the new year in Las Vegas and from there we would like very much to go to Mammoth lakes and yosemit, but we don't know if it would be possible because of our inexperience of driving in ice and snow. Please, if you can, help us telling the best roads to take .

Tanks in advance, Silvana and Rogerio

You're very welcome - and we might need that help one day!

Frisco is quite right about not heading any further north up the 395 in winter - although there's lots to see in and near Death Valley in the winter time and of course, that's the time to visit Death Valley.

BW's idea about skiing inside Yosemite is brilliant - plus, you can judge your own ability to deal with the roads, and the park rangers will let you know whether you need chains - Yosemite is very well managed in the winter.

Even if all you did on this trip was Las Vegas, Death Valley and Yosemite, it would be an amazing trip through landscapes that you would never find in Brazil.

As for me, getting to see Rio de Janeiro is a lifelong dream! BTW, your English is great - and I think you'll find yourself understanding Spanish here pretty quickly (and many people speak it, it's just so similar to Portuguese).
