Well 140 may still be closed in September from the continuing Rock Slide so you may be driving in from 41 through Fresno and Fish Camp or you can drive on 120 through the Big Oak Flat entrance into the valley and then to El Portal. You could try to get a place at teh Yosemite Lodge right in ther park or in El Portal you could stay at Yosemite View. Here's a link to secure lodging:

Where would you be coming from though?

we are driving in from monterey area to yosemite and onto dv then onto Southern Arizona - not quite sure where we will be entering AZ as we have covered the north half of the state in a previous trip.

So from Monterey you can enter easily from any of the entrances. If you are staying in El Portal and 140 is open all the way then enter from there. If it's closed you could take 120 into the park do some sights and then make your way to El Portal from the valley or do 99 south to 145 in Madera to 41 through Fish Camp and into the Valley.

MOnterey via 120 to the valley will take 4.5 hours

MOnterey to El Portal on 140 - 3.3 hours with another 30 minutes to the valley

Monterey via Fish Camp to the Valley will take 4.5 hours

Exit over Tioga Pass and south on 395.

It is closed due to a rock slide east of Briceburg which is east of Mariposa. It blocks 140 between 99 and Yosemite. It does NOT block the entrance to Yosemite from the El Portal area so visitors can still enter and exit through Arch Rock to the accommodations there. Visitors staying in Mariposa or west of the slide area have to enter the park through Big Oak Flat to the north or the south entrance on 41. There is no estimated date for opening the road due to the size of the slide and its lack of stability. It has continued to slide so they are unable to say when it will stabilize enough to clear it and make repairs. There is talk of a 6 month closure but nothing actually official on that.
