Vegas-Napa Valley Road Trip

We are planning a 7 night road trip next August and would be grateful for any advice you can give. After 2 nights in LV we plan to spend our first night in Lone Pine having set off early to take in the main sights of DV.WE do not want to rush too much so is it realistic to arrive in LP early evening? We intend to stop at Furnace Creek for lunch

Just one more question, where is the best base to see Mono Lake and Bodie? Is it realistic to do both in one day?(Sorry-2 questions!) Can we do them on the way to Yosemite or should we visit when we leave Yosemite for Lake Tahoe?

Many thanks

.

It certainly can be done to leave Vegas in the morning and be in Lone Pine for the evening. You would however miss a lot of what Death Valley has to offer and it is so pretty.

Lone Pine is ok, but how about staying in DV and then driving to Lee Vining which would be a good base for Bodie and Mono Lake. You can do both in one day but it will be quite a full day. Why not do one on your way into Yosemite and one on your way to Lake Tahoe.

It may be easier if you post your thoughts on your whole 7 day itinerary then folks can give their thoughts and suggestions. My initial thoughts are that you have a very full itinerary for 7 days. It is a beautiful area and as you say, you certainly don't want to rush through it.

The best way to experience Mono Lake is on a guided walk at the South Tufa Reserve. Budget cuts have eliminated the talks and walks that the rangers from the Mono Lake Visitor Center give during summer but volunteers from the Mono Lake Committee are still giving them.

Here's there current calendar:

South Tufa is also on the current state park closure list but whether this will affect the guided volunteer walks is still uncertain. I doubt it but you will have better information when you check back early next summer.

If you stay in Lee Vining or nearby June Lakes, you could certainly visit Mono Lake in the morning and then Bodie in the afternoon. However, as suggested above, Bodie might be a better fit on your day when you travel up to Tahoe if you backtrack over Tioga Pass. Thankfully, Bodie is not on the closure list. Of course, if you decide to drive to Tahoe via Hwy 49 and 88 instead, it would be best to see Bodie before entering Yosemite.

Staying in Death Valley as Blue has said, certainly is an option. Stargazing in DV is something you'll never forget and it makes a genuine desert experience. Will be hot but you'll have more time to explore DV. Do you already have an itinerary for your DV visit?

For south Tufas at Mono Lake. You also can explore yourselves and if you have an National Parks Pass just put it on the dashboard because the pass is valid for visiting Mono Lake. You'll have to pay a separate fee for Bodie.

The pass I'm talking about is called America the Beautiful pass and is valid for a year for car and passengers. The pass is $ 80,-- and if you are visiting many National Parks it will save you money. You can buy the pass at the entrance of your first NP http://store.usgs.gov/pass/index.html DV and Yosemite are $ 20,-- each already
