One night stop between DV and Williams.

Hi Guys,

I wonder if someone can recommend a nice place for overnight stop.

After visiting DV we head towards Williams for Grand Canyon. But we don’t want to get there until the following day.

We are planning to leave DV about mid day-ish after an over night stop.

As we will be visiting Las Vegas after Grand Canyon we don’t want to go there for the over night stop. Some one suggested Zion national Park, but is it not long way off from DV?

Can any one suggest a nice place after DV within 4/5 hours driving?

You are correct, Zion is a long way out of your way to Williams. By the way, if you are staying at Williams to see the Grand Canyon, you do realize that it is an hour's drive away from the canyon?

From DV, you might want to take 95, zipping past Las Vegas, then continue south to Bullhead City. From there pick up Historic Route 66, going through Oatman and over Sitgreaves Pass to Kingman, AZ.

This route may be a bit longer than 4-5 hours (not much, though) and you will get a great taste of some western U.S. history! Route 66 is quite famous, and it follows the same basic route that was laid out for wagons in the 1860's - in fact you can still see the original wagon road near the top of the Pass. (Hey, we call 150 years really old here, lol!)

Kingman is a nice, modern, largish town with lots of accomodation and restaurants.

Then upon leaving GC, you can take Hwy 93 over Hoover Dam back to LV.

You can take 95 from Death Valley but to avoid Las Vegas highways you also can drive from Death Valley (Furnace Creek) to Death Valley Junction (190), take State Line road to Pahrump and 160 to I15 south of Las Vegas. Now you'll have the choice to stay at Boulder City near Lake Mead or drive to Kingman via Hoover Dam. Most direct route. Or drive south on 95 from Boulder City to Searchlight and to Laughlin or Bullhead City as my fellow posters have said. Laughlin is little Las Vegas and you can make a nice stroll along Colorado River at the backside of the casinos. In Bullhead City I would recommend Lodge on the River but only if you can get a "suite" right by the river and the pool. Great views from the balcony. Nothing fancy though and a cheap place. Next day definitely drive from Laughlin/Bullhead City to Oatman (detour on 95, no direct connection between Bullhead City and Oatman) for a visit and drive old R66 over Sitgreaves Pass to Kingman and R66 to Williams. Another option is to drive from Death Valley to Baker and via Mojave National Preserve to Laughlin/Bullhead City. This will be a detour but can be done in app. 5 hours.

Thank you guys for some excellent ideas. The Route 66 wasn’t in our plan; we don’t want to miss this opportunity to drive on Route 66.

If I leave DV around mid day-ish how many hours will it take to arrive at Laughlin?

If this is going to be more than 4/5 hrs then we need to find a different place.

We like to see Laughlin a bit and then next day take the historic route R66 via Kingman all the way to Williams. How many hours do I need to allow for this R66 route?

We are staying at Williams for one night only because all the hotels in Grand Canyon are full that night. After one night’s stay at Williams we will make an early morning dash to Grand Canyon where we will be staying for next two nights.

One other thing.......

Which part of Route 66 is best for site seeing?

On Google I noticed that it goes via Kingman - Hackberry - peach springs - Seligman - williams.

Is this route any good? or should I take a different route?

Yes, best part of R66 is the drive to Oatman and the drive on Sitgreaves pass to Kingman. The road is a bit like in the old days. In Oatman feed the burro's (you can buy carrots there, part of Oatman's economy) and you'll have company the rest of your Oatman stay. The stretch Kingman-Hackberry-Seligman is a smooth 65 mph black asphalt drive and same scenery as I40 but Hackberry makes the detour worthwhile with its outside R66 museum and have a drink inside at the visitor center, nice folks. Also a stop in Seligman is recommended. Have a burger, icecream or drink at the Snow Cap and use the outside dunny.........

Another vote for Rt 66 from Laughlin thru Oatman, over the Sigreaves Pass,Kingman ,Hackberry,

Peach Springs,into Seligman.

Like Tet said buy some carrots and feed the Burros

in Oatman. If time stood still this is the place.

Great stop Oatman.

IMO i would reserve an upper floor with a view of the Colorado Rivar at the Golden Nugget in Laughlin.

Golden Nugget #1 rated hotel in Laughln by TA reviewers,We loved it,other rooms along river, shabby.

I would stop for lunch in Seligman at Lilo's cafe

also rated #1 by TA reviewers.Lilo's Cafe fantastic.

I would consider getting my room here in Seligman and then head up to the Canyon in the morning after having breakfast here.

We stayed in Williams last year and liked it but Seligman gets our vote this year.

Either way you can't lose...

Could not get a room in Canyon so decided to stay in Seligman on way to Death Valley..

Great stretch of the Old West you will see on this route.

Thank you all.

Have made a booking at Golden Nugget for one night.

I was pleasantly surprised about the room rate; $25/night.

How do they do it? I suppose they attract you in with a good room rate and then once you are in they hope you will be spending your money in the Casinos.

Any idea how many hours it might take from DV to Golden Nugget?

App. 4 hours from DV (Furnace Creek) to Laughlin. Great rate and good advice by Joe. You won't be sorry taking 2 days for the trip to GC!
