death valley to las vegas (via mojave desert) route

Hi

I'm staying in death valley for 2 nights and would like to find a scenic route to head to las vegas - ideally stopping of briefly to see the dunes in mojave desert (got an suv but don't think it's a 4wd). Any tips on a good route and approx travel time?

Any way you go in Death Valley is a scenic way to go. Where thy eye is cast is beauty found.

Suppose you mean Stovepipe Wells Dunes. You don't need a suv. Just park your car and walk. Very remote are Eureka Dunes. You can see them from Ubehebe Crater (bring binoculars) or drive. It's a long trip though and you'll need a Suv. Driving from DV to LV can be done via Beatty, DV Junction and Soshone. Best route depends on what you have seen before.

Opps, I meant visiting the Mojave Reserve e.g. Kelso dunes - on way from DV to Las Vegas.

From Death Valley National Park take Badwater Road all the way to 127 just north of Shoshone. Turn right (south) to 127 and continue on this road all the way to Baker. It is about 120 miles from Death Valley NP Visitor Center to Baker and about 2 1/2 hours. We saw two police cars on this isolated road so speeding can be a hazard to your wallet. In Baker, on the other side of I-15, you are entering Mojave National Preserve on Kelbaker Road. Go south for 34 miles to Kelso Depot Visitor Center. To get to sand dunes continue south for 8 miles and then turn right to the raod leading directly to sand dunes. There is a big obvious brown sign directing you to Sand Dunes. 3 miles farther is a parking for the dunes. The best time for a visit is early in the morning. We got there before 10 am and the light was still exquisite. The road to the dunes is dirt but we drove in our car (no SUV). After your visit at the dunes go back to Kelso visitor center the way you came and turn right on Kelso Cima Road which is going to take you through the park all the way to I-15. Once you get on I-15 it is 50-60 miles to Las Vegas. Make sure you have enough time in Mojave National Preserve. Try to stop in more places than just sand dunes and Kelso Depot (which has a great visitor center and a small but nice museum). When you get to Kelso Visitor Center it is a good idea to ask a park ranger about road conditions and suggestions for the best places to stop in the park.

Places gave you great advice. Nothing to add. The drive to Kelso Dunes is suitable for normal cars. Kelso Dunes are the second largest dunes in Cal. (After Eureka Dunes) Enjoy!
