Drive Yosemite - Las Vegas

I am wondering what kind of vehicle to hire to drive from Yosemite to Las Vegas. Would an SUV like a Chevrolet Equinox be better than an ordinary Sedan car like a Pontiac G6 ?

As long as it's not snowing you don't need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The roads are very good along this route. Many people like driving a SUV, however the gas usage is not a good as the smaller car.

The fact that this is desert leads many people to believe they need 4WD. Actually, most main visitor sites are accessible in a regular car. And as Ricardo said, a car is more fuel-efficient.

For first-time visitors, 4WD can also be an unneeded distraction. To get their money's worth for the higher cost, they may decide to make an arduous trek to some remote place. Being unfamiliar with the road and terrain, they use hours of precious time that could be better used to see more along the main roads. The scenic or historic value of some backcountry sites (en route and at the destination) may not be worth the time and effort when you weigh it against what you might have to miss.

Also, unfamiliarity with the terrain has been known to get people stuck, which is more than just an inconvenience in hot DV weather.

For repeat visitors who want to see more obscure sites, 4WD can be fun. But if you have just a day or two, it's best to focus on the main roads. Some of the suggested itineraries in this forum and the Death Valley National Park forum may give you ideas about good ways to use your limited time.

Enjoy your trip!

Wise words by Ricardo and FR. You don't need a SUV for 4wd but the advantage of a SUV is the higher seating, that's why my wife talked me into one on our next visit but you can hire a 2wd SUV too.

Don't hire a small car. Your luggage won't fit in the boot (unless you are alone) and with the USA gasprizes (VERY low to us Europeans) you'll smile after refilling your tank. SUV or not.
