McGrath State Beach Camping

Hi all,

We are thinking of camping out @ McGrath and we just wanted some general information about how the sites are, if the camping is close to the beach, is it a nice area? Any information greatly appreciated.

thanks, Jen.

Have you seen this map?

The beach is really wide so to get to the water it's a bit of a walk but not really bad. Here's an aerial view:

We checked out camping there a couple years ago. McGrath beach has quite an undertow. We had young kids at the time and decided against it. Just an FYI.

have you been to McGrath? I'm looking for a RV-campground for 3 nights in july/august 2008 along the coast. Please inform me about your experiences when you have been there,

thanks in advance!

We have camped there twice - in 2002 and 2006. In 2002 it had not yet been flooded severely by the Santa Clara river next door, and we could easily (1/4 mile) walk to the beach. Then, in 2005 or early 2006 there was a major flooding that re-did part of the beach, and caused everyone to have to walk pretty far around lagoons and bird nesting sites to get to the beach. That said, however, we have enjoyed McGrath immensely both times.

Campsites are far apart, these are these bushes that look like they are out of Dr. Seuss - green with these puffy pink flowers, and surprisingly, no bees around there... (Maybe cause the bees are all of in the agricultural growing areas, which are not far away from McGrath).. Yes, it does have a strong undertow at times and parents need to be right there if your child isn't a strong swimmer. But, overall, we loved it.. And, our graduated senior and his buddies are going there in 2 weeks to camp for 5 nights and to charter-fish.......

I think maybe no bees because those are oleanders? (Sp?)
