Xmas with an 11 yr old

We will be in NYC from Dec 23-30. We're confident we have a great hotel (Residence Inn Times Square), however struggling with some dining options for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

My 11 yr old will undoubtedly discover that there is no Santa Claus this year, so we'd like some fun destinations to help make this a very fun experience as she'd rather stay home and do the traditional family stuff.

Any help people can provide to make an 11 year old's trip awesome, please share. May you have a wonderful holiday season!

Christmas Day is a tough one, because most restaurants are closed, and the majority of those that are opened are expensive places with even more expensive prix fixe menus for the day.

A few more moderately-priced restaurants which are opened on Christmas Day are:

Rosa Mexicano -- gourmet Mexican food (i.e. much more sophisticated fare than your standard tacos and burritos place). Several locations, the nearest to your hotel is across from Lincoln Center at 61 W 62nd St, (212) 977-7700

Osteria al Doge. 142 West 44th Street, 212-944-3643. An upscale but lively and decidedly non-stuffy Italian restaurant with wonderful food. It's walking distance from your hotel.

Roberto Passon 741 Ninth Ave. (at 50th Street) 212-582-5599. Another highly regarded Italian restaurant, it specializes in Venetian fare.

Pigalle. 790 8th Ave (between 48th and 49th Streets), 212) 489-2233. A New York approximation of a Parisian bistro. Bustling and fun.

La Mangeoire. 1008 Second Ave (at 53rd Street), 212-759-7086 A lovely neighborhood French bistro. Warm service, nice ambience, excellent food.

There's also the New York tradition of going out for Chinese food on Christmas Day. This was originally a Jewish tradition, but now it crosses all groups. Your daughter may really enjoy going down to Chinatown on Christmas, and afterwards you can walk around the adjacent Little Italy neighborhood where there will be a riot of decorations and lights.

As for Christmas Eve, most restaurants will be opened, so you shouldn't have to make any adjustments as to dining preferences.

New York is such a wonderland at Christmas time that I can't imagine an 11-year-old not finding it allawesome. In addition to seeing the sights such as the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and the store windows at Lord & Taylor and Saks, as a California girl, she might really enjoy ice skating outdoors either at Central Park or Bryant Park.
