There are other stations like Stratford where there are no garages - it's all open.
I don't know of anything in Stamford that isn't a garage.
Darien and Noroton Heights are also open space but I don't know if they allow non-resident parking.

Fairfield Metro Station has a massive 1,500-space open lot; not sure what the parking cost is, but these web pages might help:
However, this is a bit of a distance from Stamford on I-95, and going in the opposite direction from NYC. Noroton Heights is the closest main line station to Stamford with an open parking lot: The lot is operated by the town of Darien, and a parking permit might be required unless there are some metered spaces.
