Staying at Waldorf Astoria for 2 nights -- food tips?

I am headed to NYC and staying at the Waldorf Astoria (thanks to great deal on Priceline) address: 301 Park Ave, New York, 10022.

I will have two 10 year old girls with me and we are looking for fun things to do in the area (NOT American Girl Store).

Food is important. I love Le Pain Quotidien type places (and that price point is good for us) so places similar to that would be fun (but nice if not a chain--or someplace new to us).

Also, we love places like Eataly but we are looking for new favorites. Ideas?

I would love a New York person's opinions.

Yes, we are on a budget and don't want to spend tons of money but we also want to have a nice time and understand NYC isn't inexpensive.

We are open to good ethnic food too. Sushi is a favorite but open to other things as well...

Bakeries or places with pastries a MUST!

Also, any must do kid activities aside from the usual: Museum of Natural History, American Girl shop & Dylan's Candy Shop? Is there a better candy shop than Dylan's? Is there an amazing bakery or cupcake shop?

I am desperately seeking ideas.

Suggestions in sidewalk shopping where the girls can spend their allowance? Fun clothing stores for kids outside of the usual Gap, Forever 21 type shops?

Thanks in advance.

My only comment would be, did you name your own price on Priceline? Because if you did and you only booked one room you might find you are short of beds. Priceline, name your price, bids only guarantee a bed for two people. In other cities hotels tend to be more flexible, but in NYC where rooms are notoriously small Priceline is not a good choice for more than two people.

Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I always use Priceline -- and the bed issue is a pain but the two girls are happy to toss blankets on the floor so the bed issue isn't a problem. We got the room for $150. so I can't complain. Last trip we stayed at the Algonquin for $120. and they upgraded us for free to a king sized bed -- we loved that place. We also do a lot of backpacking and camping when not exploring cities so we aren't too particular about comfort although we like staying in the upscale hotels (for fun)! Thank you, though!

Do you know

Menupages.com

The hotel is in the east 50's. The Smith is a downtown restaurant that opened a midtown location not far from your hotel. Good food, nice setting (nicer than Le Pain imo) and theys serve all day, 3 meals

http://www.thesmithnyc.com/

55th st. between Lexington &3 rd has a lot of ethnic restaurants, Chinese, Thai, Indian

Bateau Ivre is another French Cafe in that area.

Walk the High Line and go to Chelsea Market...lots of eating and some shopping. The Lobster Place has great lobster rolls. The Fat Witch is known for brownies. On the way there, if the girls like fashion, see what's on at F.I.T. Museum

There's a new market type place with multiple restaurants in Hells Kitchen. Hopefully Ziggy or someone else will tell you more.

If you go to the Natural History museum, Levains Bakery is not far with great cookies and pasrty. My favorite cupcakes are at Two Little Red Hens on teh upper east side.

Economy Candy on the lower east side is much better than Dylan,s..

What about taking the tram over to Roosevelt Island for the views? Costs the same as the subway.

Alice's Tea Cup (multiple locations) is popular for girly afternoon tea.

NYwhiz, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! This is great. You completely get what we like and then sending us in new directions with our existing tastes. I greatly appreciate your time. I can't wait to report back and let you know what we did.

Excited for some urban life -- the Vermont winter is dragging along very slowly this year.

Cheers!
