New Years Eve At Marriott Marquis Times Square!

Hi all,

I really need your help. We will be in NYC with a group of teenager girls, my ballet students, we are actually coming to NYC to perform in New York Winter Festival, but as we all wanted to be in NYC at New Year's Eve, we are coming 1 week earlier. They are all dying to see the ball falling in Times Square... But after my researchs here, I saw it may be impossible to do this with them as there will be million people waiting there beginning from around 16.00. (these are what I read here). So our only solution was to stay in a TS hotel. We first founded a place at Milford Hotel which seems like one block away from TS, so may be still a problem to reach to see the ball. But now, suddenly, there was an opening at the Marriott Marquis which from the map and also from my memory of my previous NYC visits is just in the center of TS. But I don't know from where they drop this "famous" ball. So if we stay in Marriott Marquis, can we see the ball dropping from our hotle or in front of our hotel actually??? Do you think it iwll make a difference to change our hotel from Milford to Marriott??? Please help meeee:)

The crowd starts to gather much earlier - some come in the morning!

I don't know what you are paying at the Milford Plaza - I'm sure the Marriott will be quite a bit more.

The Marriott Marquis will charge huge amounts of money for any room with a TS view that night, and those rooms are booked well in advance. Assume that you will have no view from your rooms.

The Marriott Marquis does have a big party with a balldrop view, but it is not free to hotel guests. Tickets to the party with a direct ball drop view cost $3,500 per person and they probably don't allow teens. http://www.nymarriottmarquis.com/newyearseve/ They may also be sold out.

TS pedestrians and crowds are tightly controlled by NYPD. Unless you are VERY lucky, you will not be able to step out of your hotel and just stand there to watch the ball drop. They will keep you moving or may not let you out at all right around ball drop time.

Planning to see the ball drop is unrealistic unless you spend lots of money for a party that MIGHT be able to let you out to see the ball drop (at the discretion of NYPD), or plan to stand in a pen without bathrooms, food or drink for many hours.

If you have a benefactor providing lots of money for this trip, and have a lot of money to spend on a TS party with a "maybe" ability to see the ball drop, let the forum know. There may be some parties you could attend. It seems like expectations have been set for your students (especially coming a whole week early) so you're in an unfortunate position.

"It seems like expectations have been set for your students (especially coming a whole week early) so you're in an unfortunate position." Yes, this isi totally true! And me too actually I want to experince this once in a lifetime experience... Ok, it is obvious that we will not be able to participate in these parties in the hotel... Neither any other I guess as I saw many starts at least from 700 dolar!!! (like the ball drop gala) - And no, we did not book (I alraedy booked on MM with an option of free cancel, as it is really expensive and I am not sure if the parents will approve, so I should know everything before telling them about it) - so no we did not book a room with TS view... Actually we will pay more than Milford of course but it may worth it if this will help us: Now:

- I understand that we will not be able to see from inside the MM the ball drop

- I also understand that we may not go out of the hotel like minutes before ball drop and see it from there

BUT, staying in a hotel just there, don't you think we may have the advantage of may be getting out of the hotel like a only a few hours before midnight and then as we will be already in there exactly while we will get out of the hotel, we will not have to fight to reach the Square like someone coming from somewhere else, and even if NYDP don't let us stand in front of the hotel (can we learn tis by contacting the hotel by the way???) - they will probably lead us to the closest point around not out of the ball drop view area??? So what do you think???

Nice idea but the pens will probably all be full by then and they go many blocks back away from Times Square, you will not be allowed to just stand outside of the hotel.

If you came out of the hotel a few hours before midnight, the police would direct you to the nearest pen with space (if there even was one) which would likely be so far away you would not be able to see anything. So basically yes they would direct you out of the ball drop area.

The NYPD are rightly very strict about this and sometimes even people who've paid several hundred dollars for a party close to the drop aren't allowed out at midnight, which is why most party organisers won't or at least shouldn't 'guarantee' a ball drop view.

In fact I have funny feeling that in past years on NYE guests at the Marriott Marquis had to use the back entrance to the hotel which is away from Times square, and all roads leading up to Times square are blocked off to pedestrians from at least 6th and 8th Avenues. So even if you stayed at The Milford Plaza you would not be able to walk up the road to Times Square you would be directed around the area from at least a block away.

BTW I'm not trying to rain on your parade just wanted to make sure you didn't get your hopes and expectations up too high.

:( I'm getting disappointed more every minute! But also, I read something like that from a reviewer who stayed in an hotel around TS in NYE: "they gave us resident card, so we could move freely around while others should wait in the same spot even without being able to go to bathroom" - The bad thing is I ca^'t find where I read this review, so I could send a message to him directly to ask about this.. But does anyone of you heard such a thing like resident card???

You should read some more of this forum to get an idea of what NYE in Times Square involves. People get to Times Square HOURS before the ball drop and are put into pens where they stay for the whole time. If the pens in front of your hotel are full, which I am sure they will be, the NYPD won't let you in them just because they're close. Especially if you're in a group.

If you go outside a couple of hours before the ball drop you won't be allowed to stand on the street and wait outside the hotel. As mentioned above, you *may* get very lucky stepping outside of your hotel at 11:50pm and standing there for the ball drop. It's still unlikely and the possibility is only there if you're allowed in and out of the main entrance at that time to start with.

You need to think of a backup plan (or a completely new plan all together) - if you go outside, whether it be 4 hours beforehand or 15mins beforehand, and are immediately told to keep moving and there's no chance to get into a pen with a good view...what will you do? How many of you are there? How will you ensure you'll all stay together with a million other people wanting to do the same thing as you?

I would make it very clear to the group that as you're not planning to spend 12 hours waiting in Times Square or willing to pay the money to attend some sort of event, that seeing the actual ball drop will be very, very unlikely.

EDIT - in regards to your last post, your best bet would be to CALL the hotel and speak to them about their NYE policy (in terms of exiting/entering the hotel etc). While they may allow you to come and go as normal, that doesn't mean that they will be able to do anything about getting you a good spot for the ball drop. That is all up to the NYPD - not the hotels.

Dear Melb, I read sooooo much about it and understood how difficult it is: that's why I am ready to pay myself and make the parents pay also for their daugthers 650 dolars per person for 3 nights in a hotel!!! That was because I was thinking that staying just in there, would give us some advantages about it. For exemple we were also told having a reservation in a restaurant at TS would give us the cahnce to see the ball, another thing that people suggested me to do! So I thought it would be better to have a hotel there! Ok, if I contact the hotel, they will at least know if NYPD let their customer to stand out of the main entrance and see the ball dropping... All the cold, waiting without even sitting, not eating etc... all is ok for us we could do all of them, BUT not being able to use toilets for around 9 hours!!! This is impossible!!! How people do that????
