Advice needed for 1 night stay near to JFK airport

We are staying 3 nights at the London Hotel at the end of febuary before going onto barbados for a week , however we have to fly back to new york for return flight back to UK . We land around 1900 on saturday 9th march , return flight is 1900 on the sunday . Do we stay at a hotel near the airport or can anyone advise on where to stay that is in area that is easy/close to the airport or do we stay in manhattan again but will it be worth it by the time we pay taxi/train fees to get there and back ? We almost have the whole day on the sunday and dont really just want to stay in at the hotel as we are more then likey to vacate the room at 1200 . Any ideas are appreciated

There's absolutely nothing to do near the airport for an entire day. Your 2 options are

>staying in another area of Queens either closer to Manhattan (Long Island City) or at least in an area with some restaurants and things to do near a subway station (Woodside or Flushing) or

>staying in Manhattan.

Since hotel prices are not very high in Feb., I personally would stay in Manhattan. Train connections to JFK are easy and relatively inexpensive, esp on a Sunday (~$7-10/person) and while you may need to vacate the hotel at noon, most any hotel will hold your luggage til you need to head out to the airport and it will give you a whole afternoon to do something; at least have a nice brunch. If you provide the exact date and a budget, we can offer some options.

thanks nywhiz , i gave you the dates arrive sat 9th march and depart on sunday the 10th march . I thought there was not much to do near the airport so will have a look at Long island hotel , budget would be around $150 for the night ? brunch sounds ideal , we will have access to the BA first class lounge so can get in there around 1600 I think . read somewhere else that staying near Penn Station might be easy as the transport link is there for the airport ?

Thanks for your help

It will be easy to find a room for $150 or less in Long Island CITY (not the same as Long Island) but a bit of a challenge in Manhattan maybe. Yes, staying near Penn station is a good idea to be near the train, but not the best dining options for brunch near there.

In Long Island City, the Verve is $109 for a queen bed (even cheaper if you prepay). You can get there on the subway from JFK but you'll have to take the subway from the hotel to get something to eat either in Manhattan or Astoria Queens.

In Manhattan, you'd have to use a website like Priceline or Hotwire and prepay to get a room under $200 I think unless you find something on travelzoo.com

The Affinia Manhattan directly across from Penn station is $199 plus tax

If you like (or are willing to try) Korean food you can get a "brunch" in Koreatown just a couple of blocks from Penn Station. Of course you also have time to have brunch anywhere in Manhattan and just get back to your hotel in time to get a Long Island Rail Road train from Penn Station.

On Sundays there's a "city fare" on the Long Island Rail Road which makes it only marginally more expensive than taking the subway to Jamaica.

Am now thinking Soho Grand as can get it for $259 , is it easy enough to get there from the airport ? Or just get a taxi ?

maps.google.com

type at the top

Soho Grand NYC to JFK airport NYC

You'll get a driving map with est. time (for taxi or car service). Click the train icon for instructions on taking the train.

Soho Grand is a nice hotel and will be nice to spend some time down there vs. midtown where you're staying at the London. BUT, be warned that Soho is a bit sleepy on Sunday mornings. Most places down there don't open til 11 or 12 and brunch doesn't start in most places til noon. (can't serve alcohol in NYC on Sunday til noon). One idea for Sunday morning if you're up early is a visit to the

brooklynflea.com

Easy to get to from Soho. There's also a flea market in Chelsea (Manhattan)

PS if you don't take the train, I'd order a car service like

dial7.com

to pick you up. Won't cost any more than a taxi and you know it will be there exactly when you need it.
