The FAQ page on airport transfers explains all of your options. Have you looked at it?

The easiest is to get into a taxi. The most cost effective is to take the AirTrain to the subway for $7.50/person.

Many thanks, I think we will risk the train. Hopefully the Westin hotel won't be too difficult to find

To get to the Westin, take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station/Sutphin Blvd.

Transfer to the 'E Train subway heading into Manhattan (buy an unlimited ride metrocard for each of you) and get out at the Port Authority bus terminal stop (42 st & 8th ave.) The hotel is almost across the street.

Note, however, that your hotel is not actually in Times Square, and when travelling by subway you do not really want the Times Square station (and this is why it is necessary for people who do not know the city well to say where they are actually going, rather than vague approximations like "Times Square.")

Your hotel is on the southeast corner of Eighth Avenue and West 43rd Street (an with a regular numbered grid of streets, it isn't difficult to find at all.) There is a large subway station that runs under Eighth Avenue from 40th to 44th Streets that is used by the A, C and E trains, and that is called "42nd Street". While this is connected tot he Timies Square station by means of a long underground passageway, it is NOT the same station as Times Square, which is a long block away at Seventh Avenue.

As noted, you want to take the AirTrain to Jamaica, and then the E subway. At the station in Jamaica where you board (Sutphin Boulevard) two different lines stop there, but you want only the E heading towards Manhattan. When you get off at 42nd Street, there is an underground mezzanine level above the platform level that allows you to access all the exits.
