Car Hire - Advice needed

We are travelling to NY next June. We arrive at JFK on 19th and are having 3 nights in the city before driving up state to stay with family. Any ideas on the best place to pick up the hire car. We will pick it up on 22nd but not too sure about hiring in the city and negotiating the manhattan traffic. Would it be better to head back to the airport or take a train out of town to pick up a car?

Comments appreciated.

Manhattan traffic is fairly simple - so many streets are one way, so you can't really get into trouble, and the grid system makes things easy! I would pick up a car somewhere near your hotel. (Where exactly will depend on where your hotel is, and which car rental agency you want to use.)

But if the Manhattan traffic is concerning, you could head out of the city. This depends where upstate you are going. If you wanted, you could get a train to Poughkeepsie and get Enterprise to pick you up from the station to get your rental car. That's a pretty easy process, and it's a very scenic train ride.

The lower rates of car rental in the New York City Area is Fort Lee, NJ and the state of Connecticut. You can avoid the Manhattan traffic and the higher insurance costs that drive up rates within city limits. There are some peer-to-peer operations like Zip Car and Jolly Wheels or do a google search for any private owner rentals in NYC. They fall under a different insurance and tax bracket that will still be something decently priced in the 5 boroughs.
