East Harlem

Having never been to New York City, I'm not really sure about the different parts to stay in. I'm looking at accommodation in East Harlem right next to a subway station - is this area safe and would access be quick and efficient to the main tourist areas from here?

What kind of accomodation?

I know of no legal hotels or hostels in East Harlem. The more important questions than "is the area safe" are therefore "is the accomodation a scam," and "is the accomodation legal?"

Can you tell us what accomodation you are considering?

Thanks for your replies but you haven't answered my questions. It's a bed and breakfast hostel advertised on Tripadvisor, but I don't see what that has got to do with what I was asking about East Harlem in general - do I have to wait for a destination expert to reply for a straight answer?

East Harlem is safe (and has several good inexpensive Mexican restaurants), but you're dependent on just the east side subway lines, which might strike some people as inconvenient. It's not the back of beyond or anything, just less convenient than some other areas of Manhattan.

There are many owner occupied bed and breakfasts in Harlem that have been around longer than many.

Harlem is very safe and accessiable to many parts of the city. The number 4,5 and 6 subway lines run frequently and fast. The only issue is when there is work being done on the subway lines. The trains will then skip stops. But, alternative routes will be provided.

Harlem use to have a bad stigma; it has been very difficult to break. But, it has become one of the safest, most expensive areas for townhomes and movement of real estate has been rapid.

Being advertised on TripAdvisor doesn't make something legal, and doesn't guarantee that it isn't a scam. It's up to you if you care. I was just trying to help.
