How much extra time should we allow for traffic to JFK?

Hi. We will be flying out of JFK next Wed on a 6:15 flight. Mapquest claims 8 1/2 hours from us in West Virginia. We are wondering how much time to tack on to the 8 1/2 to allow for traffic through NYC area in the early afternoon.

Any suggestions? We would like to be at the airport by 3 to allow plenty of time.

Thanks.

Rob

I know it sounds nuts, and probably is. It's just personal preference. If you add up the time it takes to drive to the nearest airport for us 2-4 hours, all the hassles of connecting flights and lay-over times...... we would just rather drive to where we can fly direct. Even with the gas and extra food we come out a little ahead money wise and would rather drive in comfort for 8 hours than spend 8 hours shlepping our way through airports and crowded connecting flights.

Like I said, a little nutty, but that's just us.

Is this a domestic or an international flight?

Did you have a look to see whether you could find a reasonably priced / comparable flight out of Washington Dulles?

Are you planning to park at JFK Airport?

You'd have to tell us where in West Virginia you are driving from and what route you are taking.

You might also consider checking airfare from Washington Dulles to JFK. jetBlue has some low airfares in that market. I believe parking at Dulles is much less expensive than JFK Airport. At least off-site / remote parking at Dulles may be cheaper than the lowest at JFK. When you take into account tolls, parking, wear and tear, hassle, risk of traffic and gas along the way, it might not cost a tremendous amount more to fly from IAD to JFK.

If you come the right way you will not come anywhere near Manhattan to get to Jfk from the south. I would come ub most of the way the night before and stay in a hotel (motel) by the side of the road . Why would you ever try to do this all in one day ?

Here is a thought: Drive to Harrisburg, PA and take Amtrak to Penn Station NY. From Penn Station take the Long Island Rail Road to Jamaica, and then the AirTrain to Penn Station. Amtrak fare from Harrisburg for 2 people is $94 -- but think of the price of gas, tolls, and parking, and then the relative cost becomes much less.

If you insist on driving all the way, you should consider coming via Staten Island, and missing Manhattan entirely.

With any rush hour traffic, you might need an extra 2-3 hrs, that SI expressway could be murder. Who knows !!!

I would add two hours to be safe. If your early.- Terminal 4 has the best food court and shopping and you could go there after you check your bags in any terminal, but just leave time to go through security before you go back to your gate and terminal for boarding time. The train to go just around the airport is free.

Hi again. We are flying to London from JFK. The route suggested by mapquest has us taking a southern route. 78E to to 287 across Stanton Island.

We did look at Dulles flights but it is a 6 hour drive to Dulles and with the waiting at the airport and flight we would get there about the same time as driving.

We've done this several times out of Newark and it has worked out well for us. Besides, my car has much more legroom.

It's Staten Island, not Stanton, just so you know.
