Places to visit outside of NYC- (no more than 3 hrs. away)

I am putting together a possible itinerary for our family trip this summer(2 adults, 3 kids, 17,14,9). We want to spend about 6 days in NYC after renting a car and driving to Mystic, CT. and spending 2 nights there.

Can anyone suggest any other place that we should look into visiting that won't take us more than 2 hours from NYC?

We don't want to do Boston again.(we do love it though) We've been to Maine a few times. We are not familiar with the area around Mystic.

We like seaside village towns, and seeing sights we don't see here in So. Calif.

Maybe the villages on the north shore of Long Island that are along the water, like Port Jefferson, Huntington.

The MTA Metro-North Railroad website provides information on a variety of Connecticut and Hudson Valley attractions:

The Historic Hudson Valley website describes other possibilities:

The Rockefeller estate at Kykuit is sprctacular, but your youngest family mamber wouldn't appreciate it just yet.

Have you definitely decided on Mystic and are looking for suggestions of things to see/do in that area... or perhaps you're considering other places instead of Mystic?

The Mahantucket Museum, devoted to Native American history and life, on the heavily wooded grounds of the sprawling Foxwoods Casino is unique and very well done:

I'm guessing you're already aware of Mystic Seaport and the Aquarium, but perhaps these aren't already on your radar screen:

*Ocean Beach Park, with pool, nature trail, mini-golf course, etc.

* Project Oceanology

It might be a good idea to maybe drive to Long Island, see Port jefferson village (beautiful), then take your car onto the ferry to CT and drive to Mystic. That way, you can see 2 different places with a short ferry ride.

have you done the Berkshires (Lenox, Lee, Great Barrington?)...you could go to Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow...it is a wonderful area, beautiful and very unlike So. California....another thought.....Newport, RI and Providence....i think much more interesting than Mystic (which i think is rather commercial); if you did the Berkshires, you could combine it with stops in the Hudson Valley on the way down to Manhattan

My husband use to go to Mystic every summer as a child and visit his grandfather...so that is why we chose Mystic. I think he has the address to his grandfather's house and would even like to drive by. (that'll take about 10 minutes!) But I did see they have an aquarium and I'm still researching the town to see what else is there.

But thank you for all the suggestions. I have a lot of research to do.

On our recent trip to NYC we spent 2 days with a friend in Rhode Island. It is a gorgeous area - lots to look at for the kids, lovely little seaside villages and a nice holiday feel around Kingston, Newport, etc.

Enjoy your trip.

Oops, I didn't make it clear that the links in my previous post were all to places in the Mystic area.

If you have flexibility in scheduling this jaunt, roxy, I recommend that you go mid-week when lodgings -- anywhere along the coast, in the Berkshires, etc. -- are less likely to require a minimum stay than on "in season" weekends.
