Gramercy Park - Gramercy Day?

I heard that there is a weekend in May when Gramercy Park is open to the public -- and that this is called Gramercy Day.

Has anyone heard of this? Is it real? Do you know which day it will be this year?

Is there any other way to take a quiet stroll through this private park without staying at the Gramercy Hotel or spending $20 million on one of the surrounding buildings?

While I have never heard it referred to as "Gramercy Day", Gramercy Park is usually open to the public onece a year, on the afternoon of the first Saturday in May.

Honestly, Gramercy Park is just as well viewed from the periphery, as from inside. It is small and intimate and it isn't as if there are high walls surrounding a "secret garden". The ironwork surrounding the park is visually penetrable. Going on the Free Day means lots of people in any case and that sort of ruins the private viewing if that is what you are after.

If you like beautiful special parks, go uptown to 105th Street across from El Museo del Barrio on Fifth Avenue, the Conservartory Garden. It is really a treat and exceptionally designed. And free and open. And then you can take the bus all the way to any destination you choose.
