I've read in a number of travel guides that in New York there is no sales tax charged on items of clothing under $110. Is this true? Thanks for your help!
No, that is only during "Tax Free Weeks" which happen in Feb and September. The rest of the year it is 8.25% because the mayor hates us.
I hardly ever pay attention, but isn't the rate now 8.375% from 8.625% prior?
For a time a few years ago there was no sales tax on any one clothing item under $110. This is not longer true. There is sales tax on all clothing just recently changed to 8.375 percent as a previous poster mentioned. Once in a while, the City decides that there will be no sales tax on all clothing for a week. But I have not heard of one of these weeks coming soon. Since you are from the UK, some department stores like Bloomingdales will give you a discount on most items in the store if you show your passport at the coustomer service desk before you begin shopping. The tax is 8.625%, by the way.
I stand corrected, was unaware of this, thank you very much.
(Hate to be giving wrong info!).
