Train from DC to NYC

We've never done this so please forgive my ignorance... but which train exactly do you take from DC to Washington? Is Amtrak the only train carrier?

Amtrak is the only train operator from Washington D.C. to New York City however Amtrak has Acela Express trains (a little more luxurious and very fast), Metroliners (upscale and fast), and Regional trains (these trains are a little more basic and make a few more stops but represent the best value for your dollar if time and luxury aren't critical).

D.C.'s Union Station is conveniently located near Capitol Hill, New York's Penn Station is conveniently located in Midtown.

Amtrak is the only one and there are several type of trains

including a regular train and some that are supposed to take an hour less costing much more. You can google Amtrak and

get the various schedules including time and prices. If you take

the regular train try to pick one that makes fewer stops.

Would you consider a bus trip? It is much cheaper and nearly as fast as the train. http://washny.com/sched_stops.html

I really don't suggest the bus unless the cost savings is critically important, the train is a much nicer and a much more pleasant way to go. Yes, there are buses for one third of the price of the train (maybe even one quarter of the price) but as with everything you get what you pay for. Traffic is unpredictable, the terminals aren't as nice as Union Station, and there is no on board cafe or anything, its just all interstate highway, the train is somewhat pretty through northern Maryland and Delaware.
