Italian and a good bagel

I'm traveling to NYC on business in a couple weeks. I'm staying at the Courtyard near Fifth Ave/E 40th. I would like to find a good Italian place to grab a bite to eat for dinner and would love a NY bagel for breakfast. Any suggestions on what might be in that area? Thanks!

Mercato is very good. About a 20 min walk or so from your hotel. I think that's the closest one I've tried that I like.

Ai Fiori is closer and is one of (or at least used to be - can't remember if it's on the 2018 list too) the Michelin restaurants. Haven't tried it.

On third, between 37th and 38th is Daniel's Bagel Bakery. I like the bagels and they have an assortment of smoked fish (not just lox) to go with your bagel. I haven't been there in 2 years, but as much as I LOVE their bagels, I did not like their coffee one bit. Maybe that has changed.

Luckily I was staying nearby ... so while my family got ready to go out, I bought bagels there and coffee elsewhere and carried it back to our room.

I'm not familiar with Daniel's Bagels, but it looks legit. When it comes to bagels in NYC, ask if anything is fresh (fresh is always best!) and don't toast the bagel unless it has been sitting around all day...

Or do what you want and we will call you a tourist ;)

For Italian, Sam's Place & Villa Berulia are good neighborhood places but not destination restaurants.

A good bagel shouldn't be toasted. That's like eating a good steak well done.

If it's raw, then it's not a good bagel! (But might be a good steak tartar....)

Not the best of areas for Italian. Ai Fiori is the closest good one, but thats higher end. You got very solid Roberta's pizza at Urbanspace Vanderbilt

Other than that go south.. Marta, 2nd ave Deli, Her Name is Han (Korean) not too far away. Just throwing other options

I would only toast the bagel that got stale in my home. If the bagel is stale in the store, don't buy it.

BTW, my credentials-- born and bred New Yorker who has been eating bagels before they were a tourist attraction and when the types were; plain, onion, sesame, poppy and garlic.

Oh Marta is a great idea, especially if you want pizza.

If a bagel is hot and fresh I don't toast it but it,s not a crime to toast it if that,s how you like it! C'mon.
