It was a fictional store in the movie, but based on FAO Schwartz toy store - on 5th Ave at 58th or 59th street. Was also in the movie "Big" (the real store that is).

I didn't realise it was a fictional store used in Home Alone 2 - I always assumed it was the real FAO Schwartz!

I have to say I was quite disappointed when I visited FAO Schwartz - the 'magic' I was expecting just wasn't there. From what I've read here, I believe the store was refurbished and hasn't been as good as it was before.

Personally I preferred Toys R Us in Times Square, although it doesn't quite have the same nostalgic significance for those of us that loved Big and (apparently inaccurately) Home Alone!

The 'toy store' in the Home Alone movie does or did not exist - it was a set on a soundstage.

I've heard of splitting the atom. But Poppa has equalled, if not rivalled, this feat by splitting the Translucentlavender posts, both of which were identical, in any event.

The joy of doing something on a sound stage is that you can be much more innovative in the way in which you move things around. Whereas, if it had been the real FAI Schwarz toystore, it probably would have been just as disappointing on film as it is in reality. But I'm not a child ; so perhaps children would have a better idea of whether FAO Schwarz is all it is really cracked up to be.

FAO Schwartz was, indeed, better before its reconstruction. There used to be a whole section in the back on the store just for Barbie things - it made a 7-year old me very happy. The sets for the toys seemed more elaborate - the last time I was there, there were no sculptures made of Lego, and not nearly enough robotic singing animals. Toys R Us Times Square has become the premier toy store in Manhattan, and it really tailors to children instead of FAO Schwartz, which seems tailed more to the adults buying the toys.

Yes, I agree.

FAO Schwarz has lost its "magic", in my opinion. After it reopened it just wasn't the same.

I guess we'll feel the same way when The Plaza reopens - I am looking forward to seeing the public places.
