carlsbad and white lands

I am going to see caverns in Carlsbad, and then to see White Sands. Should I go to Las Cruces or Alamogordo from Carlsbad?

Are there things else I must see around this area? I have 5,6 days.

Thanks for advices.

It's about a 3 hour drive from Carlsbad to White Sands, which is near Alamogordo. You might consider spending time in the Silver City area, which is another three hours west of Alamogordo.

There are a couple of things to see in Alamogordo, including a zoo and a NASA museum. Don't plan a lot of time there though. You pretty much have to go through it to get from Carlsbad to White Sands.

Take US 82 through the mountains from Artesia and visit Cloudcroft. Up there, you'll also find the solar observatory at Sunspot. The ski area may potentially be open if you go in the next few months, but it's unlikely (it's not open very often). Failing that, you can also ski at Ruidoso (Ski Apache), which is open much more often, and see Lincoln and Capitan along the way which are both on US 380 between Ruidoso and Roswell.

Lots of stuff to do: Guadalupe National Park, Hueco Tanks, some activities in El Paso, Dripping Springs outside of Las Cruces, the chile culture in Hatch, the VLA west of Socorro, Kingston (between T or C and Silver City), Valley of Fire near Carrizozo. Silver City is awesome, and there's lots else around it worth seeing.

Spend two nights in or near Carlsbad so that you can make a full day out of the Caverns. If you're there at the right time of year, you can stay for the nightly bat exodus. Spend a night in Las Cruces, probably another in Silver City, then somewhere in between like Las Cruces again or in Artesia.

Bats are in the caverns generally between end of april till the end of october. Carlsbad has a riverwalk along Pecos river and a nice Living Desert SP north of town. Other places for (short) visits in addition to the already mentioned ones are La Mesilla SW of Las Cruces, Rockhound SP near Deming and City of Rocks SP between Deming and Silver City. In Columbus is Pancho Villa SP and easy access (leave the car in the USA) to Mexico.
