Itinerary--PHX to Chinle to Grand Canyon

We arrive in PHX at 11 am on a Friday in April. Planning to drive to Chinle (5 hours?) and spend two nights. Day 2: Canyon de Chelly Vis Center, rim drive, and jeep tour (or hike to White House). Day 3: Leisurely drive from Chinle through Hubbell and Hopi Res. to Desert View and Grand Canyon (lunch or early dinner at Cameron TP). Day 4 & 5: Two full days in Grand Canyon. Day 6:Leisurely drive through Flagstaff and Sedona back to PHX on last day. Any other "must sees" or pitfalls to this plan?

Two full days at GCNP might be one more than you'll need. And your two kids will be enthralled with Sedona and the activity options there. I'd give Sedona one of those GC days. You'll wish you had more.

Better count on some 6 hours door to door between Phx and Chinle with a reststop. Best place for that stop would be at the La Posada hotel in Winslow imo.

Between Chinle and GC not only stop at the Hubbell Trading post but also at the Hopi visitor center and museum in Second Mesa. Between Second Mesa and Tuba City a short dirtroad at mm 337 leads to the overlooks on Coal MIne Canyon. Just head for the small windmill from 264.

The tours into CdC at least take 3 hours. Count on 2 hours for visiting White House and also several hours for the viewpoints along south rim.

I'd also suggest brekaing the PHX-Chinle leg up with a night spend in between - maainly becasue there's so much to see on the way. You might be interested in seeing something of the followuing along the way: Montezuma Castle and Well, Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest/Painted Desert, definitely Hubbel Trading Post at Ganado (less than an hour, on it's right off the highway). That's just a few of the bigger highlights alogn the way. You'd still make Chinle by afternoon of the second day. and two nites at the Grnad Canyon proves ample for most folks - especially if they don't want to do any extensive hiking. On the way from Chinle to the grand canyon you plan a meal at Camerion - make it late lunch so you get to your hotel (make sure that's booked ASAP inside the park!!!) before sunset!!! The rim drive is spectacular and you don't wnat to drive in the dark as the deer (and other critters) are out in force and you'd have to drive really slowly.
