Andrea - Hi, welcome to San Diego.

The City (Downtown) and beaches are an hour apart using public transportation, just so you know. In a car or taxi about 15-20 mins.

What is your per night budget? How many people and how many beds do you need? Staying at the beach in August is prime / expensive time.

If you stay in Pacific Beach you can get a bus to SeaWorld in about 20 mins. Aug is peak season so traffic will be slower.

Legoland isn't a place to get to easily. It's 40 mins, maybe an hour at least away in August and in the city of Carlsbad not San Diego. Do you have young kids with you? It's a park that is geared to toddlers to around 10 yrs old.

Please give more information on who's in your party, budget, etc. And know, that Downtown San Diego does not have a beach. The closest is Coronado. If you stay Downtown, Little Italy or Old Town those are the best places to stay w/o a car to utilize public transportation. Pacific Beach might work but, again, it's August and peak season and likely pretty expensive.

2. Re: Accommodation

It is hard to navigate San Diego to and fro Legoland/Carlsbad without a car, unfortunately. Our public transportation is horridly difficult.

So, pick one or the other to stay and visit the other for the day. Car rental for a day or two? There is a train that goes between downtown carlsbad to san diego.

You will waste a lot of vacation time on public transportation trying to get to the popular tourist sites and beaches.

If you really don't want a car, then a Downtown neighborhood is probably the best bet.

Thank you for you responses, coming from Australia where its winter you forget that its summer over there. There are my husband and I plus our son who will be 11 by then. we do love the beach and parks, we don't want to be on the go everyday. Is 7 nights too long to stay? If we could find an apartment that would be great so that we don't have to eat out all the time. We would like to not spend anymore than $250 a night. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks again

Check TA, VRBO and the like for rentals in Pacific Beach and parts of Mission Beach. You can come back here and post links to the rentals and we can help you pick. Some locations are better than others to get around. You also want to be within walking distance to places to eat. Parts of Mission Beach may not work well for you. So we can help.

Vacation Rental By Owner

It sound like you don't have any experience with renting. Be careful. Read thoroughly the details of each property. NEVER wire transfer money to someone. Pay by credit card in case there's a problem.

Feel free to come back here and post links to the properties you are interested in.

You may want to search for "extended stay" hotels, which typically have kitchens, instead of a private rental. Both the Marriott and Hilton hotel brands each have these types of hotels if you check their websites.

Have a look at Beach Cottages

I'm not sure they'll have any availability or in your budget in Aug.

Also look at Capri by the Sea....fronting on Pacific Beach.....maybe over your budget as well, but they are individually owned condos and perhaps you can find an agent who can find you one at a reasonable price. We stayed there for under $200.....but it was February.

I would not try to visit San Diego without a car. Capri has free assigned underground parking.
