Hotel Recommendations for Mom and I in San Diego

Hello fellow travelers,

My mother and I will be in San Diego in October (extended business trip) and would like to get a couple hotel recommendations. Coming from Michigan, I am unfamiliar with the layout of the city, but know that we will want to do a few of the following:

- San Diego Zoo (where would you recommend to get discounted tickets?)

- Gas Lamp Quarter

- La Jolla (also taking recommendations for 1 night stay, but maybe just a day trip)

- Old Town

We are looking for a hotel in the $120 to $160 range.

1. Walkable to restaurants

2. Beach side/Oceanside/Marina would be awesome, but not a must

3. Including breakfast would be ideal

4. Free or inexpensive parking

5. Does not have to be a chain hotel, would be interested in some gem B&Bs too

Any recommendations? You help is appreciated!

If you can get a two bed room at La Pensione, in Little Italy that would be my first recommendation.

Maye look at the Residence Inn Gaslamp, Best Western Plus Island Palms, Horton Grand Hotel, Kona Kai Resort and Catamaran Hotel.

Those hotels will have some things you wants, but not one has them all.

Hi ,

I don't know of discount tix for the zoo. Maybe AAA has a small discount but other than that I don't know of any.

Prices may be above your limit at places like the Catamaran but you don't have to pay for parking there as the nearby residential neighborhood has plenty of free street parking.

In the same area as the Kona Kai and the Island Palms , we really like Humphreys Half Moon Inn. Not sure why scott is not a fan of it??

The Horton Grand is an historic hotel with nice atmosphere. I think the Residence Inn may also be above your price point but not sure in October.

La Jolla is barely 20min. north of downtown and part of the city of San Diego so no need to spend a night there unless that is where you decide to stay for the duration of your visit.

You haven't said where your business meetings will take place???

Just wondering if you want to be nearby?

I agree with scott.

Although the Kona Kai is slightly isolated and would take about a 20 mins walk to get to the first restaurant.

I would also add the Best Western Plus Bayside in Little Italy. But, basically any hotel listed in Downtown, Little Italy, Marina, Gaslamp you will be walking distance to some sights and lots of restaurants. The highest parking fees will likely be Gaslamp & Downtown.

When I go to San Diego with my family we always stay in Hillcrest. It is centrally located within a 15-20 min drive to all the essentials including Balboa Park for the Zoo, La Jolla, and the Gaslamp Quarter. It is located right off of the main freeways for easy access to the beach.

We stay at the Sommerset Suites on Washington Ave. The rooms include a kitchenette and continental breakfast. They do charge $10 a day to park tho.

Also the Lafayette Hotel. They do not offer breakfast but do have free parking.

Wow, thank you all. I am overwhelmed with your replies! Thank you thank you!

All of these options look great. I am leaning more toward a water front or oceanside hotel now, after further discussions with mom. Obviously this may extend the budget some.

Humphreys and the Best Western Island Palms are the top picks thus far.

What about oceanside? Any places on the pacific that are within walking distance to restaurants/shopping?

Keep it coming with the replies. This is immensely helpful!

Oceanside is too far for what you want to do.

$120 - $160 might be too low for a beach hotel. Have a look at options in Pacific Beach like b

Beach Cottages and Blue Sea Lodge.

No, elizzie is right, Oceanside is too far for the activities you want to do.

The Beach Cottages and Blue Sea Beach Hotel are good ideas in PB, maybe check the Ocean Park Inn as well. They are better for walking to restaurants than the hotels on Shelter Island.

I think the OP meant Oceanside as in "by the ocean."

Yes ! I agree with elle. Not the city of Oceanside small o meaning by the ocean.

@ITRVL4FUN, hotels facing the ocean were mentioned above in our Pacific Beach neighborhood in post #7.

Yes, my 'Oceanside' is 'on the ocean'. Thanks for clarification. I will look into Pacific Beach.
