San Diego vacation

We are a family of three adults, we are looking to go to San Diego during the month of August, this year. We have never been to San Diego before so any information would be appreciated! We are not sure of the areas and the best place to stay, we want a hotel with a pool preferably. Are there beach hotels, is this the best area to stay? We will want to visit Sea world and the Zoo. Also we want to hire a car so that we can go to LA and maybe visit one of the beaches and on another day go to Universal studios if possible. Hope someone can help! Thanks in advance.

Hi,

San Diego is a large spread out city and also the surrounding county with the same name.

It is as large as the USA state of Connecticut with beach areas, mountains and even deserts within the entire county.

Sure there are lots of beaches and they all have hotels.

Here is a web site with good descriptions:

http://www.a-zsandiegobeaches.com/

If staying near the ocean it would be best to have a car for the whole visit.

In the USA we rent cars but we hire drivers so you will be looking for a car rental.

It would be best to arrange this from a UK web site like :

http://www.carhire3000.com/ which will include all the needed insurance.

You don't say how many days you have for this trip or what your budget for lodging(in USA $$s) might be??? It is NOT convenient to stay in San Diego for the whole time if you also want to visit the sights in Los Angeles. LA is at least a 2hr. drive without traffic and Universal is on the northern edge of LA so might be even longer.

Please give us a but more info about days for the trip, budget, type of hotel(amenities) that you prefer and we can offer more intelligent suggestions.

Hi Anne,

Welcome to San Diego.

San Diego's a great place to visit, with tons of things to see and do. I suggest that you look at some of the Top Questions at the top right of this page to get a start. Also, check out the San Diego website:

http://www.sandiego.org/

In it, you'll get great descriptions of neighborhoods, activities, and attractions.

It would be helpful to know your budget for lodging (USD per night, please). Then we can recommend specific locations to you. Know that August is the end of our high season, so beachside rooms will be more expensive.

Areas with great beaches close to the city and attractions include Coronado, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla. A little farther north are the beach communities of Del Mar, Encinitas, Leucadia, and Carlsbad.

As far as a day trip to LA, I recommend actually spending a night (or two) up there. Traffic in and around LA can be horrendous and if you catch the traffic at a bad time, you could easily spend 3-4 hours driving from San Diego to Hollywood/Universal Studios. (I once took 2 hours to drive 40 miles from Anaheim to Santa Monica.)

It's best to hire a car for San Diego, but it can be done with a little time and patience using public transit. Also, when you look at hotels, look at their parking fees. Some are free; others can charge up to $30 per night on top of your room cost.

So please do a little research on the things that appeal to you, and let us know about them, as well as your budget, and we can give better recommendations.

Zed

First we need to know your per night budget in USD and how many beds you need.

Second, with only 3 days in San Diego it doesn't make much sense to spend 2 of them driving up to LA one day and Universal Studios another. As said it's at least a 2 hr drive and frequently more than that. So I would rethink 'why' you are coming to San Diego in the first place. Based on what you've mentioned, at this point without knowing more, it sounds like you should be going to LA.

Ok, sorry - 2 weeks - good to know.

I think it's been suggested that rather than driving back and forth to LA to spend a couple of nights up there.
